Recap / Leverage: Redemption S 1 E 12 "The Golf Job"

Go To

An old friend visits, sparking a self-doubting Harry to uncover an unlikely client on the links at his exclusive golf club.

Tropes stolen in this job:

  • Beyond the Impossible: Breanna is away this episode, apparently learning to code in Malbolge, an esoteric programming language designed specifically to be ridiculously difficult to code in. It required two years and the aid of software written specifically for that purpose to build the first Malbolge program.
  • Big Fun: Hurley is back, and just as upbeat and energetic as ever.
  • The Bus Came Back: Hurley! Now he's working for Leverage International.
  • Call-Back: Hurley mentions that Eliot learned hockey in a week and played baseball when he didn't even like baseball.
  • Canon Welding: Hurley mentions the Korean team led by Lee Tae-joon, the main protagonist in the unrelated Korean remake of Leverage. He also tells Eliot that Roy, Eliot’s counterpart in the remake, says hi, and also that Roy named his dog after him. Roy in the remake did have a dog named Eliot, making the name a retroactive Shout-Out.
  • Celebrity Paradox: Sophie uses the name Carol Hathaway as an alias while posing as a nurse over the phone. Noah Wyle (Harry) had his Star-Making Role on that show.
  • Crusading Lawyer: Sarah, the new associate that Harry tricks into letting him into the file room. First she rattles off criminal law with ease. Then, when Harry, pretending to be a crooked lawyer, says helping bad people get away with it is what lawyers are for, she responds with a story of how the law can and should help people.
  • The Glomp: Hurley does this to both Parker and Eliot when he arrives at HQ.
  • Groin Attack: Eliot takes down a Mook by shooting a golf ball into his crotch.
  • Hero of Another Story: Sophie and Parker are pulling some kind of job in a Catholic church, such that Sophie pretends to be first a priest then a grieving woman.
  • I Have Your Wife: Bao is afraid to defy Carl because Carl is basically holding Bao's mother hostage and could have her deported at any time.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: Money laundering? Scams at the golf course? Sweat shops? Up to eleven, turns out Carl Bishop is a human trafficker.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Harry's been hanging out with the team long enough that he can now pick a lock and pull two quick social hacks on the fly. Then he has to crack a safe.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Hurley realizes that Eliot thrives on chaos, and golf is too peaceful, so he starts doing everything he can to piss Eliot off.
