The Burning Tides

Graves has finally tracked down Twisted Fate, and he's prepared to fully exact revenge on the man who abandoned him to jail.

However, these two soon find themselves in the crossfire of Gangplank, and with Miss Fortune involved, the former friends about to become first hand witnesses to an event that will shake Bilgewater to its core.

Tropes:

  • The Chessmaster: Miss Fortune, dear god. All the events of the story were orchestrated by her to enact revenge on Gangplank for killing her mother.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The card Graves picked up from TF in the warehouse turns out to be the key to the boys' eventual escape. While Gangplank's crew checked TF for cards, they never checked Graves.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After some misunderstandings and one very narrowing (not to mention terrifying) near death experience, Graves and Fate reconcile as friends and become partners-in-crime again.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Both Graves and Twisted Fate perform these back-to-back to help the other escape from Gangplank. They somehow both survive.
  • Not Quite Dead: Gangplank manages to survive the attack, but he had to have his arm amputated as it was too mangled to save.
  • Properly Paranoid: Even after taking down Gangplank's crew and ship, Miss Fortune can't seem to celebrate and demands a purge of Gangplank's allies, along with a search for his corpse. Giving that Gangplank is very much alive, her intuition was on the money.
  • Redemption Earns Life: When Graves is dragged to the bottom of the sea after giving TF a means of escape, his former partner goes back in to save him. While they are both underwater, Gangplank's ship explodes, which likely would have killed TF if he'd stayed on land and made a run for it.
  • Retcon: Rewrites Graves and TF's origin story — TF never sold Graves to his enemies for power, he just got out of a situation that wasn't going to end well, after failing to persuade Graves to do the same. Since it still felt like betrayal to Graves, he nursed a grudge for years and was dead set on killing TF the next chance he got. The story turns when Graves realizes TF was right and he has only himself to blame for the time he spent in prison.
  • Sequel Hook: The epilogue reveals Bilgewater is now in chaos when word got out that Gangplank was dead and among it, a doctor was treating someone very familiar: Gangplank, who managed to survive the attack and he's not gonna take what Sarah did to him lying down.
  • Switching P.O.V.: The narrator of the story switches between Graves and TF, with it being told in third person for Miss Fortune and Gangplank.
