A girl is so traumatized after being raped that she cannot tell them her name or any details of the attack itself. Further investigation reveals neglectful parents and a sex predator neighborhood watch group that may be more involved than initially thought.

Tropes

  • Baby-Doll Baby: Amber suffered brain damage in a bus accident and lost the ability to recognize her real daughter's face, treating Rose as if she were an impostor. Instead, Amber became obsessed with an online video game, and fixated on the virtual "child" of her online avatar as her "son". When the police take her and her boyfriend into custody for neglecting her real daughter, she cries and yells because they'd hauled her away from the video screen when her "son" was in in-game danger.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Weber's sister who he claimed in the previous episode was Driven to Suicide after being raped by a pedophile? He was that pedophile. Also, his sister isn't dead.
  • Driven to Suicide: Edwin Adelson, who'd been previously convicted of assaulting children in other states, completely crumbles when he's accused and subsequently arraigned for the assaults on two more girls. Outside the courtroom, hounded by reporters and COAP members and facing the fact that his wife now knows about his past, he jumps in her car and deliberately drives it into the side of a large truck. If the impact didn't kill him, the car exploding certainly did.
  • Gamer Chick: Harshly deconstructed. The detectives learn Rose had been forced to live in a cupboard under the stairs and almost starved to death due to her mother and stepfather being total game addicts. The mother was hit by a bus six months previously and is now suffering from a brain injury which has led her to believe her daughter was replaced by someone else, and the stepfather doesn't care at all. The two of them are more concerned about their kid in a video game.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even Erik (who DID frame the man) was shocked by Adelson's suicide.
  • Every Car Is a Pinto: Occurs to hilarious effect in the episode. Edwin Adelson, a suspected pedophile, takes off in his car outside of a courtroom and drives into the side of a truck at a relatively low speed. The crowd reacts with shock as the officers sprint towards the crash, and after several seconds have passed, the car explodes in a spectacular fireball complete with several-story high flames...from minor front end damage that barely even crumpled the bodywork.
  • Made of Explodium: The car that Edwin Adelson drives.
  • Stab the Picture: After Erik tries to attack Benson and she knocks him out, Erik's sister picks up a bladed weapon and runs past Benson and Stabler, seemingly about to attack him. Instead, she slashes a childhood picture of her on Erik's wall to ribbons.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Erik Weber, a member of COAP (Citizens Organized Against Predators), a New York-based organization dedicated to protecting children from sexual predators. The group is prone to zealotry, with a tendency to railroad people into getting labeled as sex offenders (such as a mentally-disabled man whose only crime was public urination). Subverted in Weber's case, however: he's a pedophile himself, and joined COAP to keep the police off his tail.
  • Urine Trouble: Dead serious example. Near the end of the episode, Olivia proposes that a recently raped girl and her mother take karate and that a karate instructor named Eric Weber can teach them. However upon hearing his voice, the victim zones out into PTSD; Olivia soon realizes that the girl peed herself out of horror when she just came face-to-face with the man who raped her.
