Recap / Law And Order S 21 E 3 Filtered Life

Go To

Amanda Larson, a popular influencer, goes missing and her bloody camper van is found abandoned - suggesting she could have been murdered. The blood in the van is actually from a thief who injured himself breaking in. He says he saw a man following Amanda, and sure enough, her social media indicates she was being stalked. This leads Bernard and Cosgrove to her apparent killer, Daniel Garrett; who uses numerous aliases to lure women on dating sites.

Garrett's defence tries to portray Amanda as a self-obsessed attention-seeker, and even produces fake photos to argue she is still alive. When this doesn't work, he confesses to killing her but demands a lenient plea in exchange for telling her family where her body is. Amanda's desperate parents want to agree to this. However, Price is concerned that in a few years' time Garrett could be back on the streets and kill again. Price makes the difficult decision not to offer a plea, and instead push for conviction with a minimum sentence of 25 years to life. He wins the case.

  • Attention Whore: The defense attempts to frame Larson as such, while questioning her mother in court.
  • Convenient Photograph: Photos from Amanda Larson's social media shows that Garrett has been watching her for some time.
  • I Have Many Names: Daniel Garrett, the accused killer, has several online dating profiles with different names and educational and employment backgrounds.
  • Impossible Task: The prosecution has to prove that Garrett killed Amanda despite their being no physical evidence she was even murdered. Worse, the judge rejects the prosecution's appeal to bring in two of Garrett's former dates whom he had assaulted as witnesses to his character.
  • Missing White Woman Syndrome: Bernard refers to this trope regarding Amanda Larson, explaining as to why she's someone of much interest.
  • Never Found the Body: Following his conviction, Garrett will never tell where he dumped her, much to the dismay of Mr. and Mrs. Larson.
  • Papa Wolf: Cosgrove comes across as this and says that among other things he doesn't allow his children to have social media.
  • Phony Veteran: One of Garrett's fake profiles lists him as someone with a military background among other things.
  • Ripped from the Headlines: The case shares some aspects with the disappearance and death of influencer Gabby Petito.
