A body found outside a prep school is identified as Scott Wilder, the estranged son of real estate magnate Peter Wilder. The detectives talk to Scott's girlfriend Karen, who had thrown him out after finding out another woman had given him a card from her gynecologist. The woman is Jessie Lucas (Julianne Nicholson), who had grown up believing she was Peter Wilder's daughter. Jessie and Scott planned to extort Peter. When a test revealed that Jessie was not Peter's daughter, they still intended to follow through until she hacked out at the last minute.The truth finally comes out: Scott had stolen his father's gun. When he and Peter last spoke, Peter refused to pay up, and distraught about losing yet again, he pointed the gun at himself. Peter tried to take the gun away, but Scott still pulled the trigger.
