Tropes in this episode include:

  • Bearer of Bad News: Moennig is there to congratulate the team after arresting Wheatley, but then he has to pull Bell over to inform her of Gina's death.
  • Break Them by Talking: Wheatley does this to both Stabler and his ex-wife Angela after his arrest, both attacking Angela for falling for Stabler and revealing that he knows that Stabler is in love with someone else.
Wheatley: Girl, you are a hot mess. Still trying to seduce him? You know you're not the love of his life. Nor was that poor woman you had brutally murdered, the love of his life.
  • Love Theme: The same music heard during Stabler’s Love Confession to Benson in episode 4 is heard during Wheatley’s monologue about Stabler’s One True Love.
  • One True Love: Wheatley makes reference to this while talking to Angela and Stabler.
Wheatley: But, plot twist. There's someone else. Another woman who’s the one true love of his life.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The normally collected Bell goes to attack Richie while in jail, and Stabler of all people (who's been well known to rough up suspects) restrains her.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Bell gives one to Richie after nearly attacking him.
Bell: She wanted to protect you.note  Said you were messed up because of your father, but you were a good kid. And you were incapable of hurting anyone. (beat) You did not deserve her kindness.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The ESU team that was supposed to back up the OCB bails on them when they hear about Denise's lawsuit against the NYPD, claiming that they had other assignments.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Wheatley kills Bekher because he saw Richie kill a cop (Gina) in which Bekher would have had blackmail material over him (though he didn't know that Bekher already turned on him.)
