With the senile old groundskeeper of Arlen High, Smitty, in danger of losing his job and his pension, Hank and the boys secretly help out with maintaining the field. But the success this brings the team soon goes to Smitty's head. Elsewhere, Luanne begins dating Lucky the redneck.
- Acquired Situational Narcissism: Hank and the gang credit Smitty for fixing the football field. The problem is, Smitty believes it and gets a swollen head about the whole thing, even dubbing himself "The Wizard of Sod.""Butt out, blockhead...The Wizard's talkin'!"
- Career Versus Family: According to Hank, Smitty "Lost 2 wives to that grass."
- Loophole Abuse: Right before Hank and his friends finish maintaining the football field before Arlen's big home game, Smitty gets a ride from some security guards and catches them doing his job, gets them ejected and thinks his plans to improve the field out loud, making it clear to Hank that he'll ruin the field again and force Arlen to forfeit the game again. However, since the rules say that the home team is responsible for maintaining the field unless an "act of God or vandalism" is the reason for the field being unplayable, Hank gets the idea to have Lucky taunt the other truck racers to follow him to the football field, where they naturally ruin it even more thoroughly, covering up Smitty's misguided maintenance with their vandalism and Arlen is allowed to play their home game at a different location without having to forfeit.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: If Hank and his friends didn't hype Smitty's skills so much for the work they themselves did, he wouldn't have gotten the idea that he had done it himself and tried to improve it with things that would just ruin it worse, forcing Hank to resort to drastic measures to prevent Arlen from being disqualified right before a big game.
- Scatterbrained Senior: It's clear Smitty isn't all there upstairs anymore, frequently rambling about nonsense and falling asleep on a dime.
