Recap / King Of The Hill S 9 E 3 Death Buys A Timeshare

Go To

Hank's father, Cotton, receives an Unexpected Inheritance of $10,000, with which he decides to buy a timeshare in Mexico. Hank tags along to dissuade Cotton from buying more than he can afford, and Bill comes as Cotton's friend. Meanwhile, Peggy, Bobby and Dale attempt to sneak into local pools to beat the heat.

Tropes:

  • The Con: The timeshare company is this, at the end of the day. The sales team selects the most qualified among them to exploit the Hills and Bill's personalities, and they abandon the grift on Cotton after it's revealed he lives on a fixed income, and they won't be able to foreclose on his home down the road.
  • Continuity Nod: Topsy is mentioned to have died all the way back in "Daletech", with Cotton handling his funeral this episode.
  • The Guards Must Be Crazy: Bill repeatedly distracts timeshare security so Hank can slip past, either by warning other victims of the timeshare's problems, or simply by insulting O'Kelly, the mythical president of the company.
  • Riddle for the Ages: What happened on O'Kelly's yacht? Cotton is sworn to secrecy, but it seems to have satisfied his expectations for a life-changing purchase.
  • Shrouded in Myth: O'Kelly is depicted as a Living Legend as a ruse to draw people into the higher eschelons of the timeshare's club.
  • Unexpected Inheritance: Cotton receives $10,000 from Topsy's estate to handle his funeral arrangements, but because Topsy was cremated, he still has plenty leftover he decides to spend on the timeshare.
