Recap / King Of The Hill S 6 E 4 The Father The Son And The JC

Go To

While building homes for "Habitat for Humanity," Hank is so overwhelmed when Buck promotes him that he declares his love for his boss, which doesn't sit well with Hank's father, Cotton.

Tropes:

  • Berserk Button: Hank telling Cotton "I hate you" causes Cotton to go ballistic.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Bobby, seeing the JC on his clothes, thought Jimmy Carter was Jesus Christ. Even going by the fact that Jesus was a carpenter. Both Hank and Cotton have a laugh over his misunderstanding.
  • Cringe Comedy: Hank telling his boss "I love you" and his, his friends and family reaction to him say it, is enough to qualify for this trope.
  • Mediation Backfire: Seeing how Hank and Cotton are even more antagonistic towards one another, Peggy and Bobby decide that their good deed for Christmas is to have Hank and Cotton get along. After Hank said "I love you" to Strickland, Cotton belittles Hank more than usual, and when Peggy tells Hank he should tell Cotton how he really feels (thinking that if Hank says "I love you" to Cotton will make him calm down), Hank yells "dad, I hate you!" When Cotton starts destroying the house they're building, Bobby asks Hank how he could possibly hate his dad, and Hank responds: "There's nothing anywhere that says a father and son have to like each other, let alone love each other," causing Bobby to walk away disappointed, as Hank essentially admitted that he doesn't love him.
  • Platonic Declaration of Love: Hank does this in the most embarrassing way possible.
  • Real Men Hate Affection: Hank bemoans his L-bomb to Mr. Strickland while Cotton reacts in disgust when he is present at to said L-bomb.
  • Special Guest: David Herman as former President Jimmy Carter.
