Go To

Peggy fights back against a scam artist who tricked her into buying a diploma program from him.

Tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Response: "Peggy, let me put this in words even a genius can understand. You are not a genius."
  • Chekhov's Gunman: One of the suckered costumers is a housekeeper for Econo-Suites and the hotel would end up being the stage for Peggy's con against Dr. Vayzosa thanks to her involvement.
  • Comically Missing the Point: After finding out Dr. Vayzosa is a con-man, Peggy tries to tell the other suckered costumers that the IQ tests were rigged, but they don't understand and insist the tests proved they're smart. So Peggy just tells them that Dr. Vayzosa lied to them so he could steal their money.
  • The Cuckoo Lander Was Right: Dale is the one who immediately recognizes that the institution who administered the IQ test is a scam and explains it to Hank.
  • Delayed Wire: The essence of Peggy's plan to con Vayzosa by running a fake betting parlor (as happened in The Sting).
  • Fatal Flaw: As Peggy herself lampshades, Dr. Vayzosa's overconfidence became his downfall when she reveals she made her rigged race con blatant to play on Dr. Vayzosa's ego and used Hank as a distraction for Dr. Vayzosa to use the safe she planted in his hotel closet, only for Boomhauer to open a panel in the closet wall and pull it through.
  • Foreshadowing: Jimmy Witchard, the man with a fried brain, is basically one huge giveaway that something isn't right with Dr. Vayzosa's institute of intelligence. Peggy briefly thinks so too, until Dr. Vayzosa's praising distracts her.
  • Hit Them in the Pocketbook: The only way to truly hurt Vayzosa is by stealing the money he stole first, which Peggy does by pulling a complicated scam of her own.
  • Idiot Savant: Jimmy Witchard isn't one, but Dr. Vayzosa references this trope when Peggy briefly becomes skeptical that he apparently passed the "genius" test which (along with him stroking her ego) puts her fears to rest for the moment.
  • Kansas City Shuffle: Dr. Vayzosa at first sees through Peggy's scam, but when Hank tries to interfere, he ends up being a distraction needed to take the money from a safe he put it in. Peggy anticipated that Vayzosa would see through her scam, so she told Bobby, who told Hank and with the help of Boomhauer, steals the safe and the money within. Vayzosa realizes he's been played when he complains to the manager about his lost room safe, only for the manager to say that the hotel does not have room safes. Peggy also had a backup plan in case Hank wouldn't have taken the bait: she tells him that Vayzosa's car was parked by the hotel's valet service, which they also don't have, implying they're currently in possession of it and wouldn't have returned it until he had given them back their money. Hank thinks that stealing the car qualifies as a felony but the rest of her plan was genius.
  • Oh, Crap!: When the Econo-Suites Hotel manager tells Dr. Vayzosa that the hotel doesn't provide room safes, Vayzosa gives a look of shock.
  • Snake Oil Salesman: Dr. Vayzosa not only sells fake diplomas, but he also runs a weight loss scam which Peggy realizes that he is a con man.
  • Special Guest: Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Robert Vayzosa.
  • Tempting Fate: When Hank suspects correctly that the IQ tests are rigged to make anyone seem like a genius, Peggy has Luanne do it to prove Hank wrong. We then cut to Luanne shouting in excitement that she's a genius.
Hank: I'm gonna leave you two geniuses right here while I clean up your mess.
Peggy: Hank, I do not need you to clean up my messes. And this is not a mess! And I'll clean it up!
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee: Peggy's main plan to scam Dr. Vayzosa back is shown up until he's meant to bet all his winnings and lose it all, at which point it's seemingly derailed by him taking his winnings and Hank showing up to demand their money back, which sets the the actual scam in motion.
