Recap / King Of The Hill S 5 E 1 The Perils Of Polling

Go To

Hank has doubts about voting for George W. Bush after finding that Bush's handshake is weak. Meanwhile, Luanne falls for a Communist party leader.

Tropes:

  • The Blind Leading the Blind: Hank criticizes Luanne's shallow reasons for joining the Communist party and ignorance about their beliefs, but it's clear that he doesn't really know what communism is either as he claims communists just want to boss people around.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Dale and Bill both painfully acknowledge that Hank's rationale for not voting for Bush due to his weak handshake is trivial and stupid. Hank concedes their point, but he can't help being bothered by it.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Dale, a well-known conspiracy nut, calls Hank crazy for caring about George W. Bush having a weak handshake.
  • Honor Before Reason: It's one thing to possibly not vote over some triviality about a candidate, but choosing not to vote because "voting doesn't matter" is where Hank draws the line.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted, Hank clarifies him being "Hank R. Hill", not "Hank P. Hill"(the one who doesn't pay his discover card).
  • Serious Business: Hank has an existential crisis about voting for George Bush because he has a limp handshake.
  • Special Guest: Phil Hendrie as Epperson and Jim Ward as George W. Bush.
  • The Unreveal: As the episode was produced before the 2000 elections, it's never revealed as to who Hank voted for in the end. This is lampshaded by Luanne, who tells him that it won't come true if he tells, much to his annoyance.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Luanne calls out Hank for his refusal to vote, while adding that she might not either since it's apparently not important after all. This prompted Hank to get to the ballots in time.
