Recap / King Of The Hill S 12 E 16 Pour Some Sugar On Kahn

Go To

Kahn becomes a karaoke star to cope with his father-in-law visiting.

  • Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable: Ted Wassanasong pronounces "karaoke" as "car-ok", rather than "carrie-oh-key."
  • The Bet: Bobby and Peggy's subplot. The pair bet on mundane things throughout the episode for bragging rights. At the end of the episode, Peggy wins reverse bragging rights, meaning Bobby has to lavish her with praise.
  • Continuity Nod: Minh remembers how Kahn was a sweet rebel boy from a disco club in Laos, as she mentioned in "Father of the Bribe."
  • Gruesome Grandparent: Not even Connie appreciates her grandfather, especially when he says that she and Minh would've been better off if the latter married the wealthy Phoukong... even if as Connie points out she wouldn't exist if this happened.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Ted is this at karaoke, all of it being in his usual monotone, but like usual, Kahn just praises him. Kahn proves to be this at first, at least until he gets into the song.
  • Hidden Depths: Kahn proves to be good at karaoke, especially as a confidence booster.
  • Insistent Terminology: Minh's father insists on being called "The General," even by his own family, although this is mostly another way he bullies Kahn.
  • Karma Houdini: The General gets off scot free for breaking down Kahn's confidence by leaving early in order for Kahn to save face.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: "Obnoxious" is an understatement. The General hates Kahn with every fiber of his being, and makes his hatred pretty well known, treating him like a servant in his own house and humiliating him at the fundraiser by singing his karaoke song.
  • Pet the Dog: For once, Ted Wassonasong is nice to Kahn, encouraging him to do karaoke as a form of catharsis, and is proud of him for singing so well.
  • Recursive Image: Kahn takes a picture at the karaoke bar of him on the wall of fame that becomes this.
  • Stage Fright: Kahn gets this when the General steals his song, running away rather than perform.
  • Status Quo Is God: Kahn goes back to making himself superior to the boys after the General goes home.
