Recap / Kid Cosmic S 2 E 3 Kid Cosmic And The Heist Of Fire And Ice

Go To

The Local Heroes infiltrate the birthday party of a ruthless mob boss as part of an elaborate plan to steal two Stones of Power.

Tropes:

  • Becoming the Mask: Despite the birthday party housing some of the most notorious space criminals, the gang is ordered by Jo to enjoy themselves after swiping the Cosmic Stones, and all but Kid start to have fun. Flo plays this straighter since while her catering is part of the heist, it's still part of her diner services.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Jo witnesses Erodius' destruction first hand and believes she's in over her head. While they still manage to get the stones, Queen Xhan is disappointed in her freezing up, and Jo is worried that her mom feels the same. After seeing a commercial of an intergalactic fighting program, she is inspired to deal with her doubts.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Jo is encouraged by her friends to leave the party now that they have the twin stones, but takes Queen Xhan's advice to command them to enjoy themselves, which puts them in danger when Fantos shows up. Even if he hadn't it's still a huge risk to stick around after a heist is completed without expecting your mark to discover their valuables have been stolen.
  • Evil Gloating: Fantos swipes the Fire and Ice Stones and dangles them near Jo while boasting that he got them. Luckily, Queen Xhan warps everyone out during Erodius' attack and swipes back the stones herself.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: When Jo embraces Queen Xhan's advice she unties her hair, letting it unfurl into an afro which gives her head a silhouette like Queen Xhan's. Word of God is that this was intentional.
  • The Heist: Played straight in the first half. After the team loses the Fire and Ice Stones the first time, they are fought over throughout the galaxy before ending up in the hands of a mob boss named Fiosa. Queen Xhan and Jo spent weeks prior to the episode with a plan to infiltrate the boss's birthday party and steal it back. It ultimately pays off.
  • Happiness Is Mandatory: After completing The Heist, Jo wants to celebrate, but everyone else is ready to go home. Queen Xhan then tells her to take action as team leader, making this an order.
  • It's All About Me:
    • Jo, at Queen Xhan's urging, orders everyone to stay at the party and celebrate the success of their heist. Kid reasonably doesn't want to do this, as the party is full of bad guys (and also because it's boring to him) but does a complete 180 when Fantos arrives because he wants his telekinesis stone back.
    • At the end when they all escape, after almost losing the stones, Queen Xhan berates Jo for tarnishing her legacy by freezing up at a critical moment.
  • My Eyes Are Up Here: Boss Fiosa rebukes Fantos for gazing at her neckline, not knowing that he's actually focused on the fire and ice stones she's wearing around her necks.
  • Never My Fault: Jo and Kid shift blame of who screws up their mission, but make up for it and share the blame together, especially since it was indeed both their faults. Queen Xhan is the only one who plays this straight since she encourages Jo to take charge in a mandatory celebration, eventually overstaying their welcome.
  • Noodle Incident: Queen Xhan seems to have some history with the Bagai Mob Boss Fiosa. When Fantos reveals that she and the Local Heroes swiped the Fire and Ice Stones earlier, Fiosa mentions that Xhan had done something similar in the past.
Boss Fiosa: I shoulda known you betrayed me! This is the Aluben Nebula all over again!
  • Only Sane Man: When Jo decides to stick around and have fun, the rest of the team follow suit. Kid is the only one wanting to leave a party full of bad guys... until he sees Fantos and tries to get his stone back.
  • Oh, Crap!: Jo sees exactly who/what Erodius is and what it is capable of. The look of fear sells it, and Fantos is quick to take a selfie with her in that state to commemorate this moment.
  • Skewed Priorities: Kid desperately wants everyone to leave since the party holds some of the worst alien bad guys in the galaxy. However, he plays this straight when he sees Fantos and attempts to get his Telekinesis Stone back.
  • Spanner in the Works: Queen Xhan becomes this when she reminds Jo that a leader gives orders, not take them. This leads to Jo ordering her team to have fun at Boss Fiosa's party, shortly after stealing the stones from her. As expected, they worn out their welcome when Fantos arrives.
