Go To

An old friend visits Jessica as she sets out on an agonizing mission and learns the true cost of being a hero.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • And the Adventure Continues: How the season, the series, and Netflix's Defenders franchise ends.
  • Back for the Finale: Luke Cage returns to help Jessica figure out what to do with Trish.
    • While he doesn't show up, we hear Kilgrave's voice taunting Jessica.
  • Bittersweet Ending:
    • Jessica is forced to take down Trish, which ends with the latter being sent to the Raft, facing life imprisonment. She then plans on leaving the city, but is convinced at the very last second not to.
    • Hogarth is left all alone, with her condition worsening.
    • Malcolm and Zaya end things on a bad note. However, he still has Brianna and gets handed the keys to Alias Investigations.
    • Erik doesn't get together with Jessica, but he is hellbent on proving her that she can trust him and plans to assist Costa.
  • Book Ends: The final minutes from the first episode had Jessica stopping herself from running away from New York. The final minutes from this episode had Jessica stopping herself from running away from New York.
  • The Cameo: Luke Cage and Kilgrave (vocal only).
  • Coffin Contraband: One of the more extreme methods Trish wanted to use to get out of New York.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Jessica stops Trish from running by throwing a barrel at her, then Trish levels the field by turning out the lights.
  • Did Not Get the Girl:
    • Despite Hogarth proving her love for Kith, Kith realises that Hogarth is just a fundamentally crappy person and walks out of her life.
    • Also, Jessica tells Erik that she can't trust him, so they can't be together (yet).
  • Evil All Along: Jessica concludes that neither losing Dorothy, nor getting her powers made Trish the way she is. She always had it inside of her, as first witnessed when she unapologetically shot Jessica's mom.
  • Final Boss: With Big Bad Sallinger dead, Trish remains as the final threat Jessica has to deal with.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Before we hear Kilgrave's voice, the ticket to El Paso was colored purple.
  • Grand Finale: The final episode of not only Jessica Jones, but the entirety of Netflix's Marvel shows.
  • Heel Realization: Trish has one when Costa tells her of every charge she's being accused of. Also counts as a Villainous BSoD.
Costa: Please acknowledge that you understand the list of charges against you, for the record. Two counts of murder in the first degree. One count of murder in the second degree. Multiple counts of aggravated assault, kidnapping, breaking and entering, trespassing. And one count of attempted murder against your own sister. Ms. Walker, do you understand? Ms. Walker? Ms. Walker, do you understand?
    Trish: I'm the bad guy.
  • Ignored Epiphany: When Erik is in terrible agony being near Trish, the latter is in obvious denial about herself, rationalizing it away with Erik experiencing headaches because of himself.
  • Impaled Palm: Trish tries to kill Jessica with a knife. It ends up getting stuck in her hand.
  • Karmic Shunning: The episode sees Jeri Hogarth being dumped by Kith, sickened by Jeri's manoeuvers to break her open marriage with her husband and hving understood how fundamentally manipulative Jeri is.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Trish mercilessly beats down Dmitri, only stopped when his daughter enters the scene, causing a My God, What Have I Done? moment.
  • Needle in a Stack of Needles: When Jessica tracks down Trish to the airport, she is already hidden in one of the many coffins stored there. Jessica checks them one by one, getting more aggressive as she keeps finding empty ones. Eventually, Trish breaks out of her coffin before Jessica can find her.
  • Never My Fault: When being in Trish's presence causes Erik to bleed from the eyes, she's quick to blame his own guilt for it.
  • No More for Me: To hammer home how serious the situation is, Jessica refuses a drink when offered.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: During their fight, Jessica tells Trish that she became like her mother Dorothy.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • Despite initially helping Trish to escape, Hogarth later gets cold feet and tells Jessica about her whereabouts (which she already knew).
    • Jessica plans to leave the city for El Paso, Texas, to get to Mexico. Subverted at the very last second, as she hears the taunting voice of Kilgrave, which convinces her to stay and face her responsibilities.
  • Title Drop: The episode title comes from Trish's response to Jeri about the "ultimate sacrifice" for heroism.
  • You Are in Command Now: Jessica hands Malcolm the keys to Alias Investigations. Though since she changes her mind about leaving the city at the end, it's probably not gonna last long.
