"Dina is seeing me only as a sex object, and I have to prove to her that I'm more than just oceans of charisma. I refuse to be objectified."
Rogelio

Petra invites Rafael and Jane's family to a Mother's Day brunch-turned-lunch as Anezka throws a wrench into Jane and Petra's budding friendship. Rogelio tries to to ingratiate himself with Dina's circle. Rafael's relationship with Derek takes a darker turn.

Tropes:

  • Abilene Paradox: Petra invites Jane and her family to a Mother's Day brunch before Anezka throws a wrench into their friendship. Jane, Xo, and Alba don't want to do go because it interferes with their established traditions for Mother's Day; later, Jane and Petra fight on the phone due to poor communication, and both refuse to cancel because they want to seem like the bigger person. Rafael also doesn't feel like being there because of external problems, but all parties go for the sake of their large mixed family. This results in a lunch so awkward that the narrator invites the audience to make a Drinking Game out of it.
  • Blackmail: Derek holds Rafael's insider trading over his head to get him to sell the Fairwick for $1.
  • Drinking Game: Invoked directly by the narrator, who invites the audience to drink every time something awkward happens at the luncheon.
  • Crossover: In-universe, Rogelio deals with a Tiago crossover with rival Esteban's show Fernando e Isabel.
  • Feigning Intelligence: Rogelio drags Jane along to Dina's birthday dinner so she can help him seem smarter. It works until her phone autocorrects "NATO" to "Nazi", accidentally making him come off as a Nazi sympathizer.
  • Flynning: The duels between Tiago and Fernando, naturally. Esteban points out that it's more dramatic than historical accuracy.
  • Gag Penis: Both Esteban and Rogelio appear to have a scene like this, if the costumes are anything to go by.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Rogelio is dismayed that Dina only sees him as a sex object and hates being objectified, right before asking his costume designer to tighten his pants around the crotch.
  • Innocently Insensitive: At the brunch, Rogelio shows a little film he put together for Jane's first Mother's Day, with her loves ones talking about what a loving, attentive mother she is. This is a sweet, well-intentioned gesture, but it makes Petra feel like crap. (In Ro's defense, he didn't realize the Mother's Day celebrations would include Petra.)
  • Non-Singing Voice: In-universe, Xo sings the chanteuse's song but doesn't act the part.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Almost literally — it's Anezka's poor communication skills (and perhaps deliberate manipulating of the situation) that causes Jane and Petra's friendship to sour, but also Jane and Petra not clarifying things with each other. Anezka overhears Jane saying Petra isn't a hands-on mom and relays it to Petra as Jane saying Petra is a bad mother.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: In-universe, Rogelio's Instagram post about how he and Dina are dating is hashtagged "#Dingelio".
  • Playing Cyrano: At the dinner party, Jane feeds Rogelio lines to make him seem more intelligent and cultured. Also lampshaded and discussed.
    Dina: Like some Cyrano thing?
Rogelio: Have you seen the movie Roxanne?
  • Pygmalion Plot: Without the falling in love bit, since he's her dad. Rogelio asks Jane to help him come off as more intelligent. Lampshaded and discussed.
Jane: So, you want to do like a Pygmalion thing?
Rogelio: What? No, no, no, like a My Fair Lady thing.
  • Setting Update: Sort of comes up when discussing works of fiction. The 'classic' inspirations for My Fair Lady and Roxanne go over Rogelio's head, but he gets the gist.
  • Take That!: To performance artist Marina Abramovic, who is "very current [and] super pretentious."
Rogelio: She just stares at people for hours at a time? That's not art. That's just bad manners.
  • Twin Switch: Anezka pretends to be Petra to the night nurses.
