"Suck it up, and push those babies out."
Jane to Petra

Jane and Michael, in the honeymoon phase of their relationship, try to work around the new developments that have transpired since they were last together. Petra gives birth.

Tropes:

  • Abduction Is Love: Conversed and invoked. Lola refers to such a plot on Rogelio's first telenovela, where his character kept a woman in a cage until she fell in love with him, and intends to do the same to him when she traps him in his condo.
  • Covert Distress Code: Subverted. While held captive by a Loony Fan, Rogelio thinks Xo will see "besos" (Spanish for "kiss") as this, as he used to respond to his crazy fans with it. However, she only sees it as him passive-aggressively grouping her in with said fans.
  • Foreign Cuss Word: Petra lets out a plethora of Czech insults while giving birth.
  • Friendship Moment: Jane assisting Petra during the birth obviously helps them forge a deeper bond.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Unlike Jane and Michael, Petra is unaware that Rafael is cooperating with the police, and thinks he's just reverted back to his Millionaire Playboy ways.
  • Method Acting: Parodied in-universe during Rogelio's captivity, where he attempts to fake feelings for Lola. #RogelioDeLaDayLewis #RogelioDeLaBrando #RogelioDeLaDeNiro
Latin Lover Narrator: Bravo, Rogelio! Daniel Day-Lewis would be proud!
  • Maternity Crisis: Petra's water breaks while she's at a book signing with Jane and Rafael is far from the hospital.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: In-universe, Petra and Rafael had no idea that the protagonists of Frozen were named Elsa and Anna, so Petra has no problem naming their twins those.
Petra: Oh, no one except for you would think of that.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: Invoked. Rogelio asks if Lola prefers 'Rola' or 'Logelio'.
  • Screaming Birth: Petra has a blood problem that means she can't get a painkiller injection.
  • Shout-Out:
    • To Frozen with the Theme Twin Naming, even as Petra and Rafael deny naming their kids after the protagonists.
    • To Sliding Doors, as pointed out by the narrator, when Jane starts imagining "what-if"s to her and Michael's situation. Also a Take That!, since Petra hates that film.
    • To Scandal, which both Jane and Michael are fans of. Michael imagines the search for Rafael's half-brother as a fast-paced Scandal-type briefing, while Jane uses "Olivia Poperson" as an alias.
  • Slipping a Mickey: In a rare heroic example, Rogelio manages to hide a sedative from his stalker/captor and spike her drink.
  • Slut-Shaming: Xo is upset at Alba for reprimanding her for sleeping around in her youth, especially following the revelation that Alba lost her virginity to a man that wasn't her husband. Alba later tells her that she treated Xo like that because of her own experiences with slut-shaming after her relationship with Pablo was discovered.
  • Sweet Polly Oliver: Present in both Jane's chapter and Angelique's new book, which is why Jane initially thinks Angelique ripped her off. But as she rereads her novel she realizes that they weren't actually that similar, and Jane ripped off Twelfth Night anyway.
  • Three-Month-Old Newborn: The twins are much larger than any newborn would be, especially for a multiple birth.
  • Tranquil Fury: Invoked. Petra advises Jane to pitch her anger this way, since it's "much scarier". The narrator agrees.
