Recap / Jackie Chan Adventures S 2 E 5 The Stronger Evil

Go To

With Shendu dead, Valmont and his Enforcers lose the treasure they stole from him, except, luckily for them, the talismans. With their power at their disposal, Valmont and the Enforcers go on an all-out crime spree! Jackie Chan makes a deal with Section 13 to stop them, but only under the condition that it be his last mission.

Meanwhile, Shendu himself (in spirit form) returns to Earth as part of a deal with his evil siblings. They allow him a chance at redemption by letting him possess only one person, with his optimal candidate being Jackie Chan himself!

Can Jackie Chan fend off Valmont and his Enforcers, completely unaware that Shendu's spirit has his sights set on him?

This episode provides examples of:

  • Badass Boast: Hak-Foo dismisses his talisman powers because:
Hak-Foo: The horse for healing? I am not easily injured. The rooster for levitation? I already fly. The dog for immortality? There is not a man alive who can vanquish me.
  • Berserk Button: Tohru is surprised to see "Valmont" at the door, but the second he sees Uncle's been knocked out, he flies into a rage.
  • Betrayal Insurance: With Shendu having abandoned them to rot in the Netherworld once already and knowing how conniving he can be, his siblings ensure he will work to free them by placing on him a spell that will keep him trapped in the first body he inhabits and shall be removed by them only after they've all been freed.
Hsi Wu: You have proven crafty, brother, so we require a safety measure.
Bai Tza: Our spell will keep you bound within the human of your choosing, until you release us.
Xiao Fung: A precaution, so that we know exactly where to find you.
Tso Lan: In the event we deem it necessary to resume your eternal torment.
  • Big "NO!": Shendu, after having possessed Valmont instead of Jackie.
  • Blatant Lies: Shendu insists that he had planned to rescue his siblings but, because they remember him betraying them before, they don't buy it for a second. When he vows to free them if they let him back to Earth, they make sure he follows through with his promise, or suffer trying.
  • Butt-Monkey: While Ratso and Chow have fun with their talisman powers, Finn feels he got the "loser" powers and spends the heist grousing. After getting more impressive abilities, he ends up suffering assorted slapstick and injuries, including learning the hard way that Immortality Hurts and breaking Jackie's fall.
  • Chekhov's Gag: Finn, having been stuck with the talismans that are useless in combat, (astral projection, spiritual balance, and animation) manages to trick Hak Foo into trading with him. We see the hilarious results in the next episode.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: Tohru has a brief moment of this when he sees Valmont, being possessed by Shendu, at the entrance to Uncle's shop. This fades the moment he sees Uncle knocked out.
  • Continuity Nod: The Dark Hand's new hideout, the Helms Fish Cannery, was seen in the first season episode "The Power Within".
  • Dramatic Irony: After Tohru was sent flying by Shendu in the first season finale, the Enforcers think he's "turned in his frequent flyer miles", unaware that not only did he survive, but he pulled a Heel–Face Turn and joined Jackie's group.
  • Evolving Credits: The opening has been altered to replace the scrolling Talisman screen on Jackie's shadow fight and the live Chan sneaking with a scrolling screen that now has the seven Demon Sorcerers with the Talismans spread amongst them. The screen with the Dark Hand also no longer has Tohru in the background due to his Heel–Face Turn, and when it gets to Valmont, he lurches back and his eyes turn red, with Shendu in ghost form immediately replacing him. The shot of Jade tossing the Dragon Talisman in her hand has the Talisman replaced with the Pan'Ku Box (the Talisman would return for Season 3), and Hak Foo replaces Tohru as the enemy Jackie punches out at the end; the credits also don't have Richard Raynis credited either. This opening had already appeared in "The Mother of All Battles" prior to this episode's airing.
  • Exact Words: After Jade's first stunt with the jetpack, Jackie tells her not to play with things she doesn't know how to use. Before Jade uses the jetpack to rescue Jackie, she asks the inventor how to work it.
Jackie: I told you never to play with things you don't know how —
Jade: [pointing] Ignition, steering, throttle, brakes.
    Jackie: [grunts] Faster.
  • Geas: Shendu plans to return to the mortal realm under the promise to break his siblings out. Since they remember him betraying them in the past, they invoke a binding spell on him, forcing him to be bound with the first creature he possesses. He chooses Jackie Chan as the ideal host for revenge and his abilities. Unfortunately...
  • Get Out!: Valmont's reaction to seeing Shendu's face in the mirror. Shendu assures him the feeling is mutual, but they're stuck with each other for the time being.
  • Immortality Hurts: The Trope Namer, in fact! Finn mutters this when he gives up the Horse talisman (Calling it redundant when he already has the Dog) before he hits the top of a train tunnel.
  • Literal-Minded: When Valmont refers to Shendu's demise by saying that Jackie has done the Dark Hand a favor by eliminating "Valmont's albatross", Ratso mutters in confusion that he thought Shendu's a dragon instead of an albatross.
  • Loophole Abuse: As usual, Jade finds a way to join Jackie again. When asked to, Jackie and Black do a Preemptive No.
Jade: Didn't even let me ask! ...And if I didn't ask, how am I supposed to know what they said "no" to?
  • Never Say "Die": While believing Tohru to be dead, Ratso says he "cashed in his frequent flier miles".
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Jade blew up Shendu at the end of last season. Due to being a ghost, Shendu can freely travel between our world and the dimension his siblings are trapped in, allowing him to possess a human and set about freeing the others from captivity.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain:
    • Valmont, completely by accident, saves Jackie from getting possessed by Shendu - and winds up taking his place.
    • Captain Black even lampshades the notion that the talisman-empowered Enforcers had him, Jackie and Jade down for the count, yet "Valmont" called them back without taking even a cent of the stolen money with them.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • The Enforcers over Shendu being back. They immediately put the talismans on the floor before him to try to appease him.
    • Jackie and Black are similarly surprised to learn in the last scene that Shendu is back.
  • One Last Job: Black asks Jackie for help "one last time" when learning the Dark Hand is using the Talismans.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Before learning that Shendu's spirit has taken residence in Valmont's body, the Enforcers are dumbfounded when "Valmont" orders them to leave the loot behind, and Chow notes that Valmont's voice doesn't sound normal.
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Facing Black and Jackie while possessing Valmont, Shendu says this word for word before siccing his Shadowkhan on them.
  • Required Secondary Powers: Finn finds out the hard way that having healing to go along with immortality isn't as redundant as it seems when his midair fight with Jade above the Enforcer's van ends when the van goes through a tunnel, causing him to leave an Impact Silhouette above it...
  • Screw the Money, I Have Rules!: Shendu just ordered the Dark Hand to leave the money behind as he sees this as no importance.
  • Shout-Out: When Jackie is persuaded by Captain Black to help against the talisman-empowered Enforcers, Jade remarks "Just when you think you're out, they pull you back in".
  • So Last Season: Not necessarily by his choice, but Shendu!Valmont tells the Enforcers to keep the Talismans; as a demonic incorporeal spirit, he can no longer used their magic to either power himself or give himself life, as Jade saw fit to annihilate his statue form.
  • Spanner in the Works: Valmont pushes Jackie off a cliff right when Shendu is about to possess him. The demon is frustrated now that he is bound to his former ally and must hope to complete his promise to free his brethren to undo this spell.
  • Spoiler Opening: Zig-Zagged. The new opening gives away that Jackie won't get possessed by Shendu, who'll accidentally possess Valmont instead. However, it has Jade tossing the Pan'ku Box instead of the dragon talisman, even though the Chans won't have possession of the Pan'ku Box till the end of the season.
  • Title Drop: The episode's title is what Shendu calls his siblings.
Shendu: So, I trust you would agree that my, eh… "martyrdom", has left a void for a new, stronger evil to fill. Namely you, my brothers and sisters.
  • To Be Continued: Jackie and Black learn Shendu has possessed Valmont before being beset by the Shadowkhan.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: With "Valmont" effortlessly curb-stomping Tohru and performing other amazing physical feats, Jackie and Black assume he's just using talisman power. Then they find out Valmont is the victim of Demonic Possession.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: When Jackie grabs onto the side of the Enforcers' van, Chow attempts to turn him into a walrus with the Monkey Talisman, only to hit Ratso who was driving. After the inevitable crash, all Hak Foo can do is flatly ask :"Walrus?".
