Recap / J-WITCH S2 E4, "Seeds of Doubt"

Go To

As the Guardians deal with the sudden evolution of their powers, Drago, Miranda, and Sandpit carry out a plot to frame them for Elyon's disappearance from Earth.

  • Ascended Extra: While they haven't done much yet, Word of God is that the Enforcers' nephews (who first appear near the end of the chapter) will be more than oneshot characters in this story.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Cornelia's reaction when Elyon mentions having spoken to Shendu.
  • Casting a Shadow: Jade's already existent shadow powers have evolved to the point that she can now nullify all nearby light sources.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • Since Alchemy is a Secret-Keeper for the Guardians, she isn't tricked by Miranda into tipping off the police about Elyon's disappearance. Instead, the Knights call in an anonymous tip.
    • Due to the Guardians being familiar with Miranda's human form since midway through Season 1, she has to wear a wig and contacts to blend in on Earth.
    • Thanks to Jackie's mentorship, all the Guardians' grades have improved well enough that Will's mother doesn't threaten to move away.
    • Will learns the truth of her Quintessence powers much earlier than in canon, with Uncle and Yan Lin planning on working with her in order to make sure that she's not overwhelmed by her power like Nerissa was.
  • Frame-Up: As per canon, the Knights try to frame the Guardians for being responsible for Elyon's family disappearing.
  • Spotting the Thread: When Medina and McTiernan interrogate Will over the "evidence" (her calculator) found behind a false wall at the Browns house, her mother points out that by their account, they found the false wall at 3:30, and came back to find it gone at 3:45. Even leaving out that Will was with her the whole time, she couldn't possibly have snuck away, gone to the house, torn down a false wall and gotten back undetected in fifteen minutes.
  • Second Love: It's hinted that Miranda is starting to fall for Drago after Cedric's death.
  • Ship Tease: Drago flirtatiously compliments Miranda on looking good in her disguise, and she later mentally admits that she admires his cunning and fierceness.
  • They Would Cut You Up: Drago taunts the Guardians by saying he hopes this happens to them, comparing it to the Torches and Pitchforks method of yester-year.
  • Took a Level in Badass: As per canon, the Guardians all get increases to their elemental magic and gain secondary powers.
  • Tranquil Fury: Captain Black maintains a calm and professional tone of voice as he gives Medina and McTiernan an ass chewing over how they handled their investigation.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: Nerissa is implied to be taking an interest in Susan to fill out her team of brainwashed Guardians, since her generation has no pre-existing Shadow Guardian.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Captan Black chews out the detectives for their heavy-handed handling of the investigation.
  • Xanatos Gambit: In Nerissa's plan, if the Knights actually manage to keep the Demon Chi or not, she still comes out ahead since the conflict distracts the heroes from her true goals. She's even made plans to turn Uncle's containment of the Demon Chi the heroes capture to her advantage as well.
