Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 04 E 04 Macs Banging The Waitress

Go To

'According to my sources in the field, the Waitress is seeing somebody."
Charlie

When Charlie learns that The Waitress has a boyfriend, he enlists Mac's help to kick the guy's ass for him — unaware that the "new boyfriend" is Mac himself. Meanwhile, Dennis becomes jealous when he learns that Charlie considers Mac to be his best friend, and attempts to drive a wedge between the two of them.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Ambiguously Gay: Dennis and Charlie overhear Mac telling the Waitress that he'll only have sex with her if she's dressed as a man - specifically Dennis, while Mac dresses as Charlie - leading Charlie to conclude that he's secretly gay and in love with both of them.
  • Bat Deduction: Dennis deduces that Mac is banging the Waitress because Mac may have lied about the name of the guy he supposedly beat up.
  • Character Name Alias: Mac gives the name of the Waitress's "boyfriend" as Don Johnson when Charlie asks. Amusingly, Charlie doesn't notice anything amiss until Dennis points it out to him.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Mac plans to sleep with the Waitress as revenge for Charlie destroying one of his "Project Badass" tapes.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Dennis attempting to persuade Charlie that he's a better friend than Mac is played like he's trying to seduce Charlie, complete with letting Charlie sleep in his bed.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Charlie drinks an entire 24-pack of beer after Dennis reveals his suspicions that Mac is sleeping with the Waitress.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": When Mac starts looking for Dennis's sex tape with the Waitress under "W", she irritably points out that that's not what her name begins with. Sure enough, the tape is labeled "Waitress (coffee shop)".
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Looking closer when Mac retrieves the sex tape shows numerous others labelled by name or profession alongside a star rating. Among other things one can see Dennis has over a dozen tapes labelled "Waitress" followed by a qualifier ("Airport bar", "Steak house", "Mexican", etc.)
  • Friendship Moment: At the very end of the episode, when Dennis, Mac and Charlie agree that the three of them should all just be best friends together.
Dennis: You know what this all makes me realize, though, is that maybe the three of us are meant to be best friends together.
Charlie: Yeah, that would cause a lot less problems, if we just called it even, said we're all best buds and no more turning on each other.
Mac: People have more than one best friend, right?
  • Gilligan Cut:
Mac: I will find this guy and I will kick his ass, you know why? Because you and I are best friends.
(cut to the Waitress opening her door to reveal Mac stood outside)
    Mac: He's onto us.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: Mac films himself doing stunts for his "Project Badass" videos in order to demonstrate how badass he is.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Dennis realizing at the end that he, Mac and Charlie should be friends takes on a different meaning when you know that Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, and Charlie Day are the creators of the show.
  • Love Triangle: Between Mac, Charlie and the Waitress, though it turns out that Mac isn't actually interested in her at all and just wants to get back at Charlie, while she's using him to destroy the sex tapes Dennis and Frank made of her. A platonic version also occurs with Mac, Dennis and Charlie.
  • Manchild: Lampshaded by the Waitress when Mac asks if they can do "hand stuff".
Waitress: Oh my God, are you in junior high?
  • Minimalist Cast: Only four characters appear in this episode: Mac, Charlie, Dennis and the Waitress.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Implied when Charlie wakes in Dennis's bed to find Mac's head under the covers at Dennis's crotch level and asks what exactly it is that he's seeing. Later, Dennis and Charlie hide in Charlie's bed and triumphantly throw the covers back when Mac and the Waitress enter the apartment, only for the Waitress to sarcastically point out that it looks like they're the ones that have been caught out.
  • One-Steve Limit: Dennis invokes this by pointing out that "Don Johnson" is the name of an actor. Charlie initially defends Mac's claim that he beat up "Don Johnson" by arguing that there are probably many guys with this name.
  • Out-of-Context Eavesdropping: Dennis and Charlie decide to eavesdrop on Mac and the Waitress using their walkie-talkies, and tune in at just the right time to hear Mac state that they should dress as Dennis and Charlie to have sex (so that they can sneak in and out of Charlie's apartment unnoticed). They're understandably confused.
  • Out of Focus: Frank and Dee do not appear in this episode.
  • Potty Failure: Charlie pisses himself in Dennis's bed. It's implied to be a regular occurrence when he's had too much to drink.
  • Power Trio: Dennis describes himself, Mac and Charlie as such at the end of the episode.
  • The Reveal: The tape Charlie destroyed wasn't one of Mac's "Project Badass" tapes. It was Frank's tape of the time he slept with the Waitress.
  • Shout-Out: Dennis realizes that Mac is lying when he claims the guy who was sleeping with the Waitress was named Don Johnson, the same name of an actor who appeared on Miami Vice.
  • Stylistic Suck: Mac's "Project Badass" videos, which mostly consist of him attempting "dangerous" stunts with a series of firecrackers strapped to his clothes going off at the same time and failing epically at them.
