Recap / It Feels More Like A Memory Chapter 19 The Constitutional Convention II

Go To

"the constitutional convention ii" contains examples of:

  • all lowercase letters: Like every other chapter title of this fic, this chapter's title is in all lowercase letters.
  • The Cassandra: When Aaron complains about people arguing in circles instead of trying to stop slavery and the Civil War, he also directly references Cassandra from Classical Mythology along with her story of nobody believing her prophecy and a city burning while her family is murdered or imprisoned, saying that will be America's fate if the war isn't stopped.
  • Cassandra Truth: Aaron explicitly describes his vision of the Civil War and makes it clear this is a vision from his Seer powers. Though the characters don't disbelieve him, a few try to ignore the topic because the Constitutional Convention was about structuring the federal government and not ending slavery, and two months are spent arguing in circles instead of stopping slavery to prevent the Civil War, to Aaron's frustration which he discusses with James Madison, who explicitly references "the curse of Cassandra" in reply. Justified Trope because Seer or not, the topic of slavery was very divisive. The actual story of Cassandra, whose prophecy wasn't believed, is also referenced in this complaining session.
  • Character Filibuster: Aaron dupes Alexander's first-lifetime feat of talking for six hours straight at the Convention, though his topic of choice is much different from Alexander's.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: After Madison says Aaron is like him and he's trying to help him understand himself, and Aaron says has Madison has no idea what he's been through, the trope name nearly gets titledropped.
    "Then tell me," Madison says.
How do I know you won't use this against me the next time we go toe to toe?
    "Excuse me?"
Aaron swallows. Did he just say that out loud?
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: Following the convention of naming every chapter title after a Hamilton lyric, this chapter takes its title from the lyrics “Hamilton at the Constitutional Convention" and/or "I was chosen for the Constitutional Convention!" from "Non-Stop."
  • The Quiet One: Invoked and exploited. Benjamin Franklin advised James Madison to remain quiet on the debates over ending slavery until a pivotal moment, so that people will listen to him when he does speak instead of dismissing what he has to say on the grounds he's "part of Aaron Burr's hysterical constituency."
  • Time-Travel Tense Trouble: Aaron's use of the past tense is how Madison realizes there's more to his visions than just seeing what happens in the future, which prompts Aaron to disclose how he thinks his visions work.
Aaron: You get along with him just fine until Jefferson comes into the equation. And Hamilton will...eventually have different ideas on the interpretation of the Constitution than you do. Political parties will form, lines will be drawn. I always strove to not allow those lines to affect my friendships.
    Madison: Strove?
Aaron: My visions are realistic enough that they feel like memories. At least most of them are. They happen in real time, they’re fully immersive, smell, taste, touch, everything. They’re...luckily they’re usually distinct enough that I can distinguish them from reality fairly easily, but I speak of them in the past tense sometimes, because they seemed very real.
  • Title Drop: The chapter title is titledropped: "They had asked him to come to the Constitutional Convention."
