Recap / I Heart Arlo S 1 E 8 Jeromio Jeromio

Go To

Arlo's pet frog Jeromio is somehow feeling rather moody and depressed, and Arlo tries to find out why.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: The best way to determine why someone is feeling down is by listening to them.
  • Cheer Up Episode: Arlo finds Jeromio in a serious funk and tries spending much of the episode finding out why he's sad. However, all of his attempts are unsuccessful, and the frog runs away into the city; Arlo soon realizes he never listened to Jeromio and finally does so, and realizes the reason why Jeromio was sad is that he misses the swamp, so he takes him for a swim in the lake at Central Park which finally cheers him up.
  • Continuity Nod: When Jeromio is running away, the first location he passes through is the community garden.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: If Arlo had just simply listened and let Jeromio speak, then he maybe wouldn't have spent the whole episode wondering why he's bummed out in the first place.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Arlo briefly mistakes a woman for a police officer, before calling the baby one as well. Turns out, he was right, and blew their cover.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Jeromio's first major role.
  • Dramatic Drop: Arlo drops the cake he made for Jeromio when he sees his friends throwing a supposed funeral for him.
  • Dreadful Musician: The singer of Who Cut the Beans? is totally poor, as his singing sounds way off-key and nonsense.
  • Fair-Play Whodunnit: You'll know the reason Jeromio is depressed is because he misses the swamp, as he is clearly uttering "swamp" a few times and even draws a picture of a pond.
  • Mistaken for Dying: The episode starts with Arlo's gang holding a funeral for Jeromio who is thought to have died. Then Arlo comes over and reveals Jeromio is still alive, but just gloomy.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Arlo during his talk with the bench statue when he realizes he didn't listen to Jeromio.
  • One-Steve Limit: Arlo briefly encounters a few people who are also named Jeromio. Even a woman has that name.
  • Orbital Shot: Arlo gets one as he listens for Jeromio's croaking to pinpoint his location.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Arlo's issue for the episode. He spends so much time trying to find out why Jeromio is upset that he completely fails to listen to his own frog's feelings. It's only when he has a silent talk with a bench statue does he realize he didn't listen to Jeromio, and makes up with him.
  • Storefront Television Display: Arlo finally reunites with Jeromio near a store with various televisions on display, each one showing scenes of swamp environments. Said displays, along with finally listening to his frog, are what causes him to realize Jeromio is homesick.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Jeromio utters "Swamp!" a few times, allowing Arlo to realize why he's sad.
  • Thinking Tic: Arlo moving as many parts of him to keep from being distracted; Thao refers to this as "wild thrashing".
  • Title Drop: By Marcellus during the song he sings at Jeromio's supposed funeral near the beginning.
