Recap / I Carly S 03 Ep 12 I Space Out

Go To

iSpace Out is the 12th episode in the 3rd season of iCarly.

The iCarlys are asked by an eccentric billionaire to be the first webshow to go into outer space. But when they find out another show was offered the chance as well, they go through a series of tests to prove if they are fit for space travel.

Back at the apartment, Spencer is visited by a mysterious little girl.

Tropes:

  • Big "SHUT UP!": Carly tells Freddie this when he tries to calm her down.
    Carly: SHUT UP, Freddie!
  • Catchphrase: For the Exercise Rox teens: "Get some!"
  • Claustrophobia: The iCarlys being locked in a space pod for 36 hours is a test to see if they develop "Claustrophobic astro-psychosis", or space madness, which makes people lose control and go nuts. This eventually affects Carly, causing her to escape.
  • Downer Ending: Carly becomes claustrophobic and flees the space pod, thus disqualifying iCarly and leaving Exercise Rox to win and go to space by default.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Quick glances at the monitor during the tests show the Exercise Rox hosts' names as Tancy and Corbin.
  • Layman's Terms: When the test instructor is explains about the blast chair, Freddie sums it up in more simple words.
Instructor: (annoyed) Yes, thank you for dumbing it down.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Carly and Spencer both seeing the little girl had mundane explanations, Spencer missing Carly and Carly's residual space madness, but it's odd they both saw the same girl.
  • Only One Finds It Fun: For the first two test simulations, most of the test subjects are screaming during their experiences. Except for Sam, who is cheering and laughing as she does hers, much to the amusement of the staff.
  • Punctuated Pounding: When a claustrophobic Carly freaks out in the space pod, she slams against the locked door while screaming, "UN! LOCK! THIS! POD!"
  • Rule of Three: There were three tests the iCarly and Exercise Rox teams went through. The first one is sitting in a chair to get the feeling of blasting off as it vibrates; the second is being spun around in an antigravity chair to experience space disorientation; the final test is being locked in a simulated space pod for 36 hours to see if the teams can handle being in a confined location while in space.
  • Running Gag: Someone setting off the emergency fire extinguisher.
  • Silly Simian: Discussed, when the billionaire who is financing this competition mentions that there will be a monkey in the space capsule.
Carly: There is really going to be a monkey?!
Billionaire: No, sorry. But monkeys are fun, aren't they? (to the training instructor) Say monkeys are fun!
    Instructor: (Irritated) Monkeys are fun.
  • Space Episode: Carly, Sam and Freddie are asked to go into space and have to take various tests to see if they are able to do such.
  • Trailers Always Spoil: The episode promo spoiled the scene of Carly having a claustrophobic freakout and escaping the space pod before it aired proper.
  • The Voiceless: The mysterious girl that visits the apartment doesn't speak.
