Recap / I Carly S 02 Ep 06 I Pie

Go To

iPie is the 6th episode in the 2nd season of iCarly.

Carly and the gang discover the 97-year old owner of their favorite pie shop has passed away, and they must find a way to preserve his legacy.

Meanwhile, Freddie is tasked with watching his mom's cousin's baby Stephanie, but she seems to like anyone but himself.

Tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Trudy towards Spencer, as she won't stop kissing him once the iCarly three force Spencer to romance Trudy in hopes of collecting the pie recipe from her. However, Spencer achieves mixed results: Trudy doesn't have the pie recipe, but she does have a clue of where the recipe could be, though even she couldn't crack the clue herself (inside Mr. Galini's computer). Yet she still insists on kissing Spencer, pie or no pie.
  • Babysitting Episode: On Freddie's end, he has to babysit the daughter of Marissa's cousin while she's at a comic book festival in New Jersey.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Galini dies, and his staff are mourning him. They are cheered up when the iCarly gang finds paper copies of his recipes and hands them over, saving their livelihoods as well as their boss's legacy.
  • Continuity Nod: This wasn't the first time Sam bashes someone in a mascot suit.
  • Exact Words: Trudy said Mr. Galini put the pie recipes "in his computer", but she couldn't find it. Turns out, the recipes are literally in his computer tower on paper, not in a digital file. Trudy complains it was foolish of him to be so unspecific.
  • Gonk: Everyone considers Trudy this, including Spencer, which is unfortunate since Trudy becomes obsessed with him. Though her actress, Wendy Haines, doesn't look like this in real life.
  • It's All About Me: When the gang finds out that Galini is died, they are truly sad about it, especially with Mario's grief. That is, except for Sam, who shouts, "Who's going to make the pies?!"
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Played with. Sam takes the last piece of Gallini's coconut cream pie for herself, without sharing it with the others. She locks herself in the bathroom, but eventually feels guilty and decides to share what's left. But they condescendingly point out she already ate most of the pie and there's only a drop of cream left.
  • Never Say "Die": Both subverted and played straight. Mario says Mr. Galini "checked out forever", and then Freddie straight-up says "he passed away".
  • No Plans, No Prototype, No Backup: Apparently, Mr. Galini kept all of the recipes in his head and never told the staff how to make his pies. The recipes that Carly and Sam solicit from their viewers are nowhere near good enough. He did put paper copies in his computer tower, which is lampshaded by Trudy as not being very specific.
  • One-Steve Limit: "Stephanie" is also the name of Jake Krandle's girlfriend.
  • Pie in the Face: Bringing the A and B plots full circle, at the end of the episode, Freddie tries this on himself in his final attempt to get Stephanie to laugh. It works!
  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: Discussed. Carly notes it's selfish to use Galini's wake to try and find his pie recipe when others are mourning him. Spencer justifies it as they're not going to hoard the recipe; they're going to give it to the staff. The gang honors the promise by handing over all of the recipes to the pie staff members, who are relieved that the shop is saved and they can preserve Galini's legacy.
  • Running Gag: Stephanie laughing at everyone except Freddie.
  • Surprisingly Happy Ending: It looks like the coconut cream pie recipe is gone forever, and Galini's pie shop will have to close down. His staff and closest relative are mourning him and holding a wake to show their love as the iCarly gang selfishly uses the event as a ruse to find the recipe on Galini's computer. They end up finding the recipes and give to the staff, leading to everyone cheering because the shop is saved and Galini's legacy is preserved.
  • Wham Line: "He checked out...forever."
