Recap / Human Resources S 01 E 04 Rutgers Is For Lovers

Go To

Rochelle and Petra the Ambition Gremlin end up fighting on what college their client should go to based on how it will affect her relationship with her girlfriend, leading to a meltdown at the high-school prom.

Tropes:

  • The Bus Came Back: Natalie el-Khoury, the trans camper from Season 4 of Big Mouth, is Nadja's sister and the granddaughter of Walter's dementia-addled client Yara.
  • Career Versus Man: A variant; Nadja has the dilemma of choosing between going to the same college as her girlfriend, or accepting her unexpected acceptance into Berkeley. She chooses the former, but it doesn't work out because her partner finds it unreasonable to choose a shallow high school romance over a real life opportunity.
  • Connected All Along: Walter's elderly client Yara and her adult son Amir turn out to be the grandmother and father of Natalie from Big Mouth, one of the more subtle overlaps between the two series.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Danielle argues with Nadja for choosing Rutgers just for her. Not only because she doesn't want that pressure and she doesn't expect their relationship to last, but because she knows that Nadja's dream is to go to Berkeley.
  • Ironic Echo: Played for drama; Nadja's parents don't believe her high school romance will last, and unfortunately, when pressured it turns out her girlfriend feels the same way.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Rochelle gets Petra distracted during Nadja's prom so she can push her to choose staying in her relationship over going to Berkeley. Unfortunately, Nadja's girlfriend does not appreciate this spontaneous gesture putting so much pressure on their relationship, when she herself doesn't even believe they'll last past the summer. They break up over this conversation, leaving Nadja no obstacles from choosing Berkeley.
  • Parental Hypocrisy: Nadja's parents disapprove of her choosing a high school romance over a spot at Berkeley, even when she points out they themselves were a high school couple. Their response is that was before they knew Berkeley was an option for her.
  • Pun-Based Title: The episode title is one letter off from "Rutgers is for losers".
  • Troll: After Natalie pops in and points out the obvious conflict between Nadja going to Berkeley and staying in her relationship, she leaves satisfied upon seeing her sister's distress.
