Recap / Hudson And Rex S 1 E 13 The Rex Files

Go To

When a deadly car accident involving the death of passenger Lonnie Raskin and hospitalization of driver Dante McGuire leads Charlie and Rex to investigate reports of a mysterious blue light in the sky, they discover the truth is more science than fiction.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Murder: Lonnie Raskin's death really was an accident. Him and Dante were in the wrong place at the wrong time when Andrew was doing a practice run with the EMP device. Their car got caught in the radius and caused them to lose control and crash into an electrical pole, killing Lonnie and hospitalizing Dante.
  • Asshole Victim: You don't have to feel too sorry for Graham Pry's death. The events of the episode happened because he conned Fiona out of her invention and all the money that she would have made from it, driving her to committing criminal acts and making her unhinged enough to murder him when she feared he would try and scam her again.
  • Blatant Lies: When Charlie brings the capacitor that he got from Tyler who got it from an eyewitness of the blue light to local EMP specialist Graham Pry and informs him of the accident, the latter claims that he never saw that particular model before. He turns out to have lied as the capacitor is revealed to have been patented under his name, but gets blown up in his shed hours later before Charlie can question him about it. He lied because the capacitor was actually Fiona's invention, not his. Pry had swindled it and all future earnings from it through the false promise that he would tell the world how much Fiona had to do with Pry's EMP jammer and patented it under his name alone.
  • The Bus Came Back: Tyler Holden makes a reappearance since "Haunted by the Past", investigating the blue light sightings and believing it to be the work of aliens. He's somewhat disappointed that it's actually the work of a drone equipped with a hi-tech EMP jammer, although he still gets to geek out alongside Jesse and Sarah about the drone and its workings when everything's done and over.
  • The Caper: Fiona and Andrew are using their EMP drone to prepare to steal a six-million dollar coin from a showing at the Soho. All of the blue light sightings are from their practice runs to fine tune the device for when the show starts.
  • Foreshadowing: Fiona Greene (Graham Pry's girlfriend)'s first appearance has her wearing a uniform for the club called the Soho. She’s actually working there to obtain information about the upcoming coin show being held there.
  • Hassle-Free Hotwire: Dante is capable of hotwiring the car him and Lonnie steal without much difficulty. He says he learned how to do it from YouTube.
  • He Knows Too Much: Fiona has Pry killed to prevent him from stopping her and Andrew's heist. Subverted in that Pry apparently knew that Fiona was using his tech for theft, but Fiona was afraid that he would steal from her again once the coin heist was complete just like how he stole the credit for her capacitor and all the earnings from it, and ordered Andrew to kill him.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: During Fiona's confession, she states that Andrew volunteered to take care of Pry, and claims he did it in a way she never intended. Minutes later, Fiona says that she told Andrew to take care of Pry, to which Charlie immediately points out. Fiona then meekly asks for a lawyer.
  • Spanner in the Works: Fiona and her partner Andrew Sullivan were working on a plan to ready their EMP jammer for the heist of a six-million-dollar coin in the next few days. Their plan was derailed because of Dante and Lonnie's late-night stunt, with Lonnie's death and the suspicious circumstances surrounding it attracting unwanted attention from the SJPD. There was also Andrew being careless enough to leave behind one of their capacitors for an eyewitness of one of their practice runs to pick up to let fall into the hands of Tyler Holden and Charlie respectively, causing the latter to investigate further into their operation.
  • Stealing the Credit: Back in her university days, Fiona designed a brilliant capacitor in Tech club that was what allowed Graham Pry’s EMP device to work. Graham had promised to patent the device under both of their names and let the world know how much Fiona had to do with it as he could bring more attention to it, but instead patented it under his name alone, taking all the credit and all future earnings from it going only to him while Fiona was left with nothing. This drove Fiona to start using Pry’s tech for theft and eventually murdered him to keep him from stopping her heist and to not let him steal from her again.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: When Charlie goes to confront Pry about why he lied about not recognizing the capacitor, he arrives just in time to witness Pry’s shed being blown up with him inside it, killing him instantly. Charlie would have been caught in the blast if not for Rex warning him and only receives a few minor scratches. The deed was done by Andrew Sullivan using a bomb flown through Pry's window by a drone soaked in nitroglycerin under orders from Fiona.
  • Surprise Car Crash: The episode begins with Dante McGuire and Lonnie Raskin stealing a car belonging to Dante's ex-girlfriend Shelly Whitby (Dante protests that he was borrowing it, not stealing it, as he had paid half for it but the car was only registered in Shelly's name and she was holding it hostage after they broke up). As they drive away, a strange blue light appears and fries the car's circuitry, causing them to lose control and crash into an electrical pole. Lonnie is killed on impact while Dante is admitted into the hospital.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Charlie calls out Jesse for letting Tyler go off on his own to search for the EMP device, as the latter two had been treating the situation like a sci-fi movie and not a murder investigation. Tyler ends up kidnapped and Bound and Gagged at Fiona's residence to keep him from spilling the beans about the coin heist.
