In part two of this Crossover episode with Law & Order, Briscoe, Curtis and McCoy go down to Baltimore to get involved in the prosecution of Dr. Janaway for the rape and murder of his daughter Brittany, only to find a shocking development in the case.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: It turns out Brittany died because her mother raped her, causing encephalitic shock, which ended up killing her. As the detectives eventually learn, that wasn't the first time Brittany's mother abused her either.
  • The Alibi: Dr. Janaway startles everyone at the trial when he admits he was sleeping with a woman at a hotel at the time Brittany was raped.
  • Back Story: Judge Andahl once served as an assistant district attorney to Adam Schiff (see Serious Business below as to why she left), and tells McCoy to say hello for her, which he's more than happy to do.
  • Bystander Syndrome: Dr. Janaway claims this is why he went through a trial - he feels guilty about what his wife did to Brittany because he didn't try to stop it from happening.
  • Call-Back: Bayliss and Pembleton bring up how Alexander Rausch died as Briscoe and Curtis were transporting him back to New York City.
  • Embarrassing Alibi: A two-part crossover with Law & Order. In the Law and Order episode "Baby, It's You", a young model dies after being sexually assaulted with such severity that she suffered internal injuries that resulted in toxic shock and infection that killed her. Every male who had access to the girl during the time of the assault has an alibi. In this episode of the same name, it turns out that this includes the girl's father, who was elsewhere having an affair that had carried on for a decade. The killer ends up being the girl's mother, who was resentful and jealous of her daughter's success.
  • Foreshadowing: Three times, we see a home video of Brittany with her father telling her to smile for her mother, except she says instead, "I love you, daddy," which shows her relationship with her mother is not good.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Brittany's mother was jealous of her beauty, which is why she abused and raped her daughter.
  • Hard-Work Montage: We see Briscoe, Curtis, Falsone, Lewis, and other detectives interviewing people at the hotel where Dr. Janaway claimed he was at the time Brittany was raped.
  • Jurisdiction Friction: As with the last time New York City and Baltimore tried to work together, it ends up like this, though in this episode, it moves up to Teeth-Clenched Teamwork.
  • Overworked Sleep: McCoy finds Ross slumped over on a desk in a conference room at work, and mentions how it must bring back memories of law school.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Especially when it's done by your own mother.
  • Serious Business: The 1986 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets (which is Truth in Television) - because Judge Andahl is a New York Mets fan, and Adam Schiff is a Boston Red Sox fan, she felt so uncomfortable after the Mets won the series she left the position.
  • Squick: In-Universe - McCoy tells Falsone he was at the beach one afternoon and saw a young pretty girl, whom he looked at, only to realize when she turned around he was ogling his own daughter, which repulsed him.
