Kenny Damon is found murdered, and as Jake Rodzinski (Bruce Campbell) is possibly a suspect, Kellerman and Lewis end up working the crime separately.
This episode contains examples of:
- Artistic License – Law Enforcement: Howard tells Kellerman and Lewis to set up a "Chinese curtain" between themselves - with Lewis investigating if Damon's death had anything to do with his criminal associates and Kellerman investigating if if Jake had anything to do with Damon's death, and the two don't talk to each other about the case - so that if Jake is responsible and accused, there's no chance of impropriety. The correct term for that type of investigation (which is otherwise Truth in Television) is a "Chinese wall".
- Bait-and-Switch: When Jake comes up from the basement waving a gun and orders his wife and kids to go down there, followed by the sound of a gunshot, the viewer and his family think that he's shot himself, but he actually shot the dog.
- Foreshadowing: Kellerman's rigid "cops don't rat on cops" sense of honor will become important in the following season, when he is falsely accused of corruption and refuses to make his life easier by informing on his colleagues in the Arson unit who actually were corrupt.
- Hard-Work Montage: We see a sequence of Kellerman and Lewis questioning a number of people relating to their separate part of the investigation of Damon's murder.
- Nothing Personal: When Jake comes to confront Kellerman in Homicide, Kellerman insists his investigation of Jake is nothing personal.
- On Second Thought: Lewis demands that Giardello change Howard's orders about the "Chinese curtain", at which point Giardello takes a look at the efficiency report he's about to file on Lewis, specifically about following orders, so Lewis changes his mind.
- Passive-Aggressive Kombat: The dispute between Pembleton and Bayliss. After Pembleton forgets to buy Bayliss a cheese sandwich (by implication not for the first time), Bayliss first ostentatiously buys pastries and donuts for every person in the squadroom except Pembleton, culminating by biting into a jam donut less than six inches from Frank's face.
- Serious Business: The fact Pembleton forgot to bring Bayliss a grilled cheese sandwich. Bayliss gets back at him by not bringing him food, by not bringing his call sheets, by not letting him borrow any of his paper. Only when Pembleton puts grilled cheese sandwiches in Bayliss' mail bin, on his desk, and in his desk drawers, does Bayliss forgive him.
- Shoot the Dog: Literally - Jake has to shoot Edgar's dog because he won't stop barking.
- Two-Part Episode
- White Dude, Black Dude: Pembleton initially suggests that he forgot Bayliss's cheese sandwich because it's such a dull and unadventurous "white guy" choice.
