Recap / Homestar Runner Kick A Ball

Go To

Airdate: March 17, 2009

Homestar and Pom Pom take on literally all the other main characters in a game of kickball.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: When Coach Z disputes one of the Umpire's calls.
    Coach Z: I don't know what kinda low-rent, three-bedroom, two-bath, section 8 sport you're playin' here... but I'm playing women's lacrosse!
  • Brick Joke: When Strong Bad complains about Pom Pom telling the ball what to do, he suggests the ball to be Pom Pom's cousin, Tim Tom, only for Homestar to say that he is way better looking than the ball. Later in the episode, Strong Mad send the ball flying around the world, and it passes Tim Tom on the way.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Zig-zagged. Strong Bad has way more teammates than Homestar, but this is due to Homestar choosing Pom Pom for all his picks... Or so everybody thinks. Homestar technically cheats by performing a "double side-mouth whisper draft" to secretly get Strong Sad on his team, but because Strong Bad wrote in the rulebook to make it considered legal, Homestar gets away with it.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: As the King of Town finds out, getting a strike-out in kickball in Free Country, USA involves getting launched off the field in a catapult.
King of Town: I never got my sunflower seeeeeeds!
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Foreshadowing: Homestar's mumbling can be heard (but not deciphered) near the beginning of the cartoon. Meanwhile, despite dictating which (non-)position he'll play, Strong Bad never actually calls Strong Sad's name during the draft
  • Heads or Tails?: When the ref has Homestar and Strong Bad try to determine who gets to pick first, he at first tells them to play one potato two potato. Due to Homestar's lack of arms though, he instead decides to do a coin toss to determine first pick.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Homestar gets away with a "double side-mouth whisper draft" because Strong Bad altered the rule-book to make it legal.
Strong Bad: Aw, the ding and the dang! The Cheat, I told you to check our Cheaters' Almanac to make sure we didn't step on any of our own Cheat-toes!
  • Lampshade Hanging: As all the major characters are busy playing the game, as the Announcer narrates the climactic last play of the game, he admits "I have no idea who I'm broadcasting to!"
  • Minimalist Cast: The entire main cast bar Homsar is involved with the match, leaving the announcer wondering who exactly he's doing the announcements for.
  • Shout-Out: The page header for the cartoon reads "A Kick-A-Ball Jam Named Saturdays", a reference to the De La Soul song "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays"
  • Visual Pun: Strong Bad scolds The Cheat for not making sure they weren't "stepping on our own cheat-toes", and The Cheat offers him a bag of Cheat-toes cheese snacks.
  • Your Mom: Homestar taunts Marzipan with "Your mother wears combat boots!" Marzipan turns out to be the one wearing boots under her skirt as she retorts "She does not!"
