Recap / High School D×D Volume 9

Go To

The second-year students at Kuoh Academy go on a school trip to Kyoto for the fall semester. When they arrive at the city, they must rescue Yasaka, a nine-tailed fox, from the Khaos Brigade's Hero Faction led by Cao Cao.

Tropes in this volume include:

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Yasaka's Nine-Tailed Fox form can destroy anything in the surrounding area.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: This time, Cao Cao and the Hero Faction are responsible for the danger in the volume's plot. Issei and the Occult Research Club's second-year students rescuing Yasaka and stopping their efforts to summon Great Red is their main mission as a team.
  • Berserk Button: Rossweisse does not take it well when her lack of boyfriend is mentioned to her face or when her clothes that were on sale get destroyed.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Le Fay and Gogmagog attempt to defeat Cao Cao during the Hero Faction's first battle with Issei. It doesn't work.
    • Towards the end of the battle at Nijo Castle, Issei summons Rias to activate his potential powers. Then, Sun Wukong and Yu-Long manage to save the day when they help Issei use his powers on Cao Cao.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Hero Faction's plan is foiled, Kyoto is saved, and an alliance is formed between the devils and the youkai, but the Hero Faction lives to fight another day.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Issei probably shouldn't have taunted Rossweisse about her lack of boyfriend like that when they were battling in the hotel staircase.
  • But Now I Must Go: At the end of the volume, Issei and the second-year students have to leave Kyoto, but he promises to Kunou that he will return someday.
  • Call-Back: Just like what happened to Asia in volume 3, Rossweisse gets embarrassed when she gets subjected to Issei's Dress Break.
  • Death Glare: Rossweisse gives one to Issei when she stops him from peeking in the girls' locker room and later when he presses her Berserk Button.
  • Delayed "Oh, Crap!": When Rossweisse gets subjected to Issei's Dress Break, she calls him out on destroying her jersey that was on sale. Then, she suddenly realizes to her horror that she's naked and doesn't take it well.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Issei pisses Rossweisse off during their fight outside the girls' locker room by telling her that she can't get a boyfriend because of her prudishness.
  • Easily Forgiven: When Kunou reconciles with Issei and his friends after she wrongfully attacks them for kidnapping Yasaka, they quickly forgive her.
  • Eye Scream: Issei defeats Cao Cao by blasting his Boosted Gear directly into his eye socket.
  • Heroes Gone Fishing: Issei and the second-year students at Kuoh Academy enjoy their trip to Kyoto before they rescue Yasaka from the Hero Faction's clutches.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: The Hero Faction wisely decides to retreat when Issei blinds Cao Cao's eye with Sun Wukong's help and Yu-Long teams up with Vritra to stop Yasaka's rampage.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: For the battle at Nijo Castle, Azazel has half of the Kyoto group stay at the hotel while Issei and his friends go to the castle.
  • Minor Crime Reveals Major Plot: Issei discovers that Yasaka has been kidnapped by the Hero Faction, which is part of the Khaos Brigade's plans to transform her into the Nine-Tailed Fox as a sacrifice to summon Great Red.
  • Naked Freak-Out: Rossweisse and Cao Cao's female mooks are understandably horrified when they get subjected to Issei's Dress Break.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Despite needing Yasaka for the ritual, Cao Cao invites Issei, his friends and Kunou to Nijo Castle just so they can witness the Hero Faction's efforts to summon Great Red. This results in Issei and Sun Wukong coming together to foil Cao Cao's plan.
  • No Body Left Behind: The Anti-Monsters are attacked by Kiba, Xenovia and Irina and they disintegrate.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Issei when he suddenly sees Kunou attacking him and later when Rossweisse is going to kill him for pushing her Berserk Button regarding her lack of boyfriend.
    • Rossweisse gets a Delayed "Oh, Crap!" when Issei uses his Dress Break on her.
    • Kunou when she realizes that Yasaka is going to turn into her Nine-Tailed Fox form.
    • Rias when Issei summons her to Kyoto and activate his potential powers.
    • Cao Cao when his eye is about to be pierced by Issei's powerful attack.
  • Power Perversion Potential: Issei tries to enter the women's locker room but is caught by Rossweisse. And when he uses Dress Break to strip off her clothes, Rossweisse admonishes him for his indecent behavior and has to remind him to use tissues to control his sex drive.
  • Put on a Bus: This time, Rias, Akeno and Koneko take their turn on the bus as this volume focuses on Issei and the second-year students at Kuoh Academy.
  • Race Against the Clock: Issei and the second-year students have to rescue Yasaka before the Hero Faction can use her as a sacrifice to summon Great Red.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When the female mooks get stripped by Issei's Dress Break, they have a collective "Oh, Crap!" and run for it.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Once Cao Cao is defeated by Issei, he and the rest of the faction escape from Kyoto.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: After Issei uses Dress Break on Rossweisse, she understandably yells at him for not controlling his sex drive and destroying her clothes.
  • The Worf Effect: Due to Rossweisse's drunkenness, she is easily bested by Cao Cao's mooks as well as Jeanne.
