Recap / Hell Girl S 2 E 3 Beloved Kei

Go To

A girl accesses the Hell Correspondence, wishing that she were a relative of a boy named Kei so that she could stay with him forever. She enters a name, saying that she wants to protect Kei. The girl, Tae, greets Kei at school the next day. Kei is in a good mood, but another girl he is walking with pulls him away. The other girl looks back and calls Tae a moron under her breath while a couple of other girls mock her for pursuing Kei romantically. Tae says that she doesn't care what others think of her because she's protecting Kei. Ai appears behind her and asks is that's really the case bringing her to the sunset world. Ai lays out the terms of the contract and Tae says that she's fine with selling her soul as long as it's for Kei. Ai gives Tae Wanyuudo's straw doll. That evening, Tae sets up her room so that Kei, who lives next door, can sleep with the other girl there and taps the window across from her room to let Kei know that everything is ready.

That night, Tae runs into Hone Onna at a nearby playground. Hone Onna pretends to be drunk and asks why Tae is there. Tae points out her room and says that Kei is meeting a girl she hates there. Hone Onna asks if Tae is really okay with that. Meanwhile, Kei and the other girl, Yumie, have dinner and watch TV in Tae's room. Yumie says she wants to go to Hawaii with Kei, who seems surprised at the idea. Outside, Hone Onna notes the oddity of the situation, but Tae says that she set it up so as not to inconvenience Kei. Hone Onna asks why Tae letting this go on if she loves Kei so much and Tae says that her feelings for Kei are unique and that while she gets jealous sometimes, she doesn't really feel like she's losing Kei. Kei signals Tae to head home and Hone Onna says she must be getting old, which the mysterious girl insults her over before running away laughing. Ren and Ai show up and Hone Onna summarizes her findings: Kei is in a relationship with a bad girl, but Tae is trying to protect him and if Yumie ever hurts him, Tae will untie the thread. Ren says he thinks it's odd that someone could hate another person enough to contact the Hell Correspondence over something so convoluted. Hone Onna decides to look into the matter further as it interests her personally. Kei taps on Tae's window to say that his date with Yumie didn't go very well. Yumie said that she wanted her first time making love to be in Hawaii, so Tae gives Kei a card with enough money to get them there. Tai heads toward Yumie's house to spy on her and finds her with another boy. They both notice Tae watching them and Yumie calls Tae a moron again.

The next day, Tae goes to a shrine and prays for Kei not to get dumped by Yumie. Hone Onna shows up and Tae tells her about what she had seen the previous night. Hone Onna asks if it wouldn't be better to let Kei know, but Tae says that that would just hurt his feelings and she needs to protect him from that. Tae says that her feelings for Kei are different from ordinary romantic love because they have lived across from each other for as long as they can remember and having that distance between them is comfortable for her. Tae says she's hiding her feelings so that won't change. Later, Kei taps on Tae's window and says that he knows that Yumie was cheating on him. Tae tries to cheer him up, but Kei says he wishes he'd never fallen for Yumie. That night, Tae meets Hone Onna again and says that this is the end of things between her and Kei because she's scared of them becoming a couple and then falling apart. Hone Onna asks why Tae thinks that and Tae says that she doesn't believe romantic love can last. Tae says she has gotten too close to Kei and runs off. Later, Tae tries to sleep, but Kei taps on her window again. When she opens it, Kei tells her that he's in love with Tae. Kei asks to come over, but Tae shuts her window. She opens it again just as Kei tries to make his way across, causing him to lose his balance and fall to his death.

The next day, Yumie tells her friends that Kei's death doesn't bother her and she pretended to be his girlfriend out of pity for how Tae kept pestering him. Tae overhears this and pulls the thread. Later, Yumie's boyfriend asks her if Kei committed suicide after finding out about her two-timing. Yumie says that she doesn't know and doesn't care, especially since Tae won't be following them around anymore. The boyfriend, actually Ren in disguise, says that Yumie really is a bad girl and reveals himself to her, showing his eye on his forehead. Yumie freaks out and the bed starts spinning in a bluish void. Wanyuudo, who has possessed the bed, says that cheating on someone is wrong. Hone Onna appears and says that Yumie needs to be punished, throwing knives at her. Ai appears and banishes Yumie to Hell. Yumie awakens on Ai's boat and is grabbed by hands that sprout out of the boat itself. Hone Onna mockingly tells Yumie that she's jealous of her popularity.

Back in the world of the living, Tae has moved to a new house and finds that her next-door neighbor looks almost exactly like Kei. A candle with Tae's name is lit.
