Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E55 "President Fred"

Go To

The high school is having a race for student body president, and Kevin goads Fred into competing against the unopposed Chad Goldenboy, certain that Fred got what it takes to improve the school. One sleep later, and Fred is suddenly, rather uncharacteristically, and very aggressively motivated to take Chad down at any cost, claiming that Chad is actually an old man pretending to be a teenager.

Tropes:

  • Adults Dressed as Children: Fred thinks Chad Goldenboy is really an old man disguised as a teenager. Kevin follows Chad and is shocked to see him as an old man going into the senior center, seemingly confirming Fred's crazy theory. But when he goes to make an enlargement of the photo he took, he sees a poster for a play at the senior center and realizes that the inverse is true: Chad is playing an old man on the play. Turns out the Imposter had replaced Fred to sabotage Chad's campaign as revenge for losing the role on the play.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Even though Fred didn't win of becoming a new student body president, but Kevin complimented her for acting like a leader.
  • Genre Savvy: Fred knows that "power does weird things to people" and later reveals she dropped out of the race early for that reason. This gives Hamster and Gretel the hint to distinguish Fred from the Imposter who is disguised as her.
  • Hidden Depths: The rather shallow Chad Goldenboy, who seems to be neglecting all the problems the school has, actually volunteered for a play for the local retirement center called Prunes for Persephone, and could come off rather convincingly as an 80-year old man with detailed make-up and his rich-people mannerisms.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: The Imposter reveals that he has locked up the real Fred in an escape room so he could pretend to be her for four days. He notes that Fred may find escape to be rather impossible, only for the actual Fred to kick the door open right after.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: After all the trouble that happened in the auditorium, Principal Funderberk tells everyone to pretend that incident never happened for legal reasons during lunch break.
  • Oh, Crap!: The Imposter after realizing Fred managed to get out of the escape room and when Hamster and Gretel were about to get after him.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: One sleep later and Fred has gotten really aggressive, becoming so laser-focused on defeating Chad Goldenboy that it actually scares Kevin that he might've created a monster. Subverted when it turns out that it was actually The Imposter the whole time, disguising himself as Fred and leading a smear campaign against Chad out of petty revenge for Chad being chosen for the play he wanted to act in.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: As with the rest of his lineup, who all had been student body president, Chad Goldenboy has little care for the things that need to be improved at school, and his only arguments are that he's rich and he smells good. Despite that, he's still popular with the masses due to his good looks.
  • Spot the Imposter: Pun not intended; as two Freds show up on debate fighting each other, Hamster and Gretel have to find out who is the real Fred, and who is The Imposter in disguise. When Fred states she withdraws from the race because "power does weird things to people", this gives the improbable duo the info that the Imposter must be the other Fred, who still lusts for power.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Kevin points out that Fred's theory that Chad Goldenboy is really an old man pretending to be a kid is one of the least weird things to happen in their town.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Fred states that "power does weird things to people", and that seems to be true when she falls victim to this trope the next day, becoming obsessed with crushing Chad Goldenboy into defeat to the point of not caring about improving the school... until it's revealed that it was actually The Imposter disguised as Fred.
