Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E50 "Bayou Barb"

Go To

The Grant-Gomez family are vacationing in a bayou town, known for the legend of Bayou Barb, owner of a diner known for her delicious waffles, who supposedly got merged with an old oak tree along with her waffle-making tools, residing in the bayou since. Dave and Carolina eat up the legend, but Kevin and Gretel think it's a mere hoax, and intend to prove it by finding out the truth within the bayou.

Tropes:

  • Con Man: The entire bayou town could count as this: it's essentially a large tourist trap with overpriced maps and t-shirts being sold, a "museum" the size of a tiny shack that hosts only a variety of ordinary items that Barb had once touched, and the townsfolk perpetuate the legend itself with cheap, practical effects; all because the Bayou Barb legend is basically the only thing that makes the town stand out, so they cash in on it as much as they can.
  • The Hermit: Bayou Barb, believing herself to be an outcast due to her warped appearance of wood, metal and flesh, chooses to hide in the bayou and shoos anyone away that comes near. In the end, however, she chooses to return to the town when she realizes she is a local celebrity... and to cash in on royalties.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, Hamster once shared a cab with the premier of Saskatchewan.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Inverted. Bayou Barb notably knows who Hamster and Gretel are despite living as The Hermit for years. She justifies that she lives in a bayou, not under a rock. This is despite being so isolated that she didn't know she went from outcast to local legend.
  • Real After All: Double subverted. At first, Kevin and Gretel discover that the woman at the diner has been keeping the myth alive with practical effects along with other townsfolk. Then they encounter the real Bayou Barb, which they initially mistake for another phony.
  • Shown Their Work: Unlike in Phineas and Ferb, alligators are correctly drawn with overlapping jaws instead of interlocking teeth like crocodiles.
