Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E12 "Dr. Eelgood"

Go To

As part of an assignment for a presentation, Gretel has to shadow her dad at work, but Dave's job is as the manager of an apartment complex, which Gretel finds boring. Regardless, she does so as Dave is tasked to fix a refrigerator at apartment 4B. However, the man staying at 4B, one Dr. Eelgood, is secretly tending an eel he mutated, and plans to use it against the aquarium that fired him. Meanwhile, Kevin and the rest of the school have to clean up the beach from trash.

Tropes

  • Brick Joke: After Eelgood's denial of having a monster eel, Dave reminds him that waterbeds are also against the rules. After he's defeated, he's revealed to be in violation of that rule.
  • Chekhov's Gun: As Dave fixes the refrigerator, he explains to Gretel how the condenser on the back uses heat to make things cold. Gretel later uses the condenser to freeze the eel by dipping it in its tank and using her heat vision on it.
  • Embarrassingly Painful Sunburn: Kevin forgot to bring sunscreen like his father said, so at the end of the beach cleanup, his face is red as a beet.
  • Floating Advice Reminder: Lampshaded when Gretel sees her father's floating head reminding her about how the refrigerator works and she says "Thanks, Dad's floating head." The head later appears to Kevin to remind him to put on sunscreen; Kevin admits he forgot it, so the floating head says, "My work here is done" and leaves.
  • Literally Shattered Lives: Hamster is taking the frozen mega eel elsewhere, but it accidentally slips out of his hands when a phone call is made to him. Hamster's high up in the air, do the math. So what does he say when Gretel asks him where he took the eel to?
  • Slippery as an Eel: Eelgood has created a giant mutant eel to get revenge on the aquarium that fired him. He calls it "the ideal eel", and it's powerful enough to hold its own against two superheroes.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When Gretel asked what the robe-covered thing is, Eelgood responds that it's definitely not a galvanized tank for a monster eel CREATED SPECIFICALLY FOR REVENGE!!
  • They Called Me Mad!: Dr. Eelgood rants that the people at the aquarium said he was insane, ending with "Who's insane now?"... and concedes that he probably is.
