Alyx sees the last power supply to the Vault get cut off, causing the Vault to fall towards the ground, only to be caught by a backup tractor beam. She fights through more soldiers and antlions, then enters a building and overhears a woman talking to someone. Listening in, it is clear she is talking to somebody high up in the Combine, and telling them to move whatever is in the Vault before Alyx gets to it. It's clear from the conversation that the person being held in the Vault is someone who survived Black Mesa and then disappeared. Eli and Russell conclude that it must be Gordon Freeman, and Russel tells Alyx about how legend has it that Gordon saved the world with just a crowbar. The woman vanishes before Alyx can find her, so Alyx continues forward toward the vault. She encounters acid-throwing antlions, then continues on to another room filled with tripmines and explosives; however, this time, she can set it off from outside, letting it all explode before she tries to enter. The chapter ends with a large fight against both Combine soldiers and antlions in a train yard.
