Gordon bargains for the return of his detective's shield in exchange for capturing the Electrocutioner, and Fish makes her move to force Falcone out.

Tropes:

  • Big Damn Kiss: Between Gordon and Thompkins at the end of the episode.
  • Boring, but Practical: Standard police issue galoshes. They're not pretty, but they come in pretty handy for Jim in this episode.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Fish Mooney's grand scheme ends up as this. She thinks that she played a perfect Batman Gambit on Falcone, but all she did was get him really pissed off and make their fight personal. When she loses her leverage, Falcone's wrath is brutal and swift. There isn't even a Mob War as he simply has her crew eliminated offscreen.
  • He's Back!: Villainous example. After doubting whether he even wants to fight Mooney's takeover instead of simply getting out of the mob business, the revelation that she used her knowledge of his beloved mother to have Liza get close to him makes Falcone furious and reminds him of the mob boss he had been, ordering Mooney taken away so he can deal with her and choking Liza to death with his bare hands.
  • It's Personal: Falcone was willing to tolerate Mooney and her scheming because it would have been bad business to have her killed. However, when she uses the memory of Falcone's mother against him, she's pressing the one Berserk Button that is guaranteed to make it personal and bring his wrath on her when her scheme fails.
  • Moment Killer: An officer interrupts Gordon's and Thompkins's kiss with news of a shootout at Fish Mooney's place.
  • Mythology Gag: "The Commissioner is gravely concerned and is on his way here right now..." as Gordon walks into the room.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Gruber walks into the shop at the beginning... he is right to be afraid of Gruber.
  • Race Against the Clock: Gordon gets 24 hours, and the Commissioner is feeling pretty generous.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Gordon gets his detective job back by walking into the police station uninvited, insulting the police commissioner and then exhorting the same commissioner by claiming that he has information that will help catch the Electrocutioner but will only reveal it if he is made the lead detective on the case. It is a pure bluff but it gets him the time and resources to figure out what the villain is after.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Buchinsky plans to take revenge on his partners who betrayed him and left him in prison.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • Fish's plan to force Falcone's retirement would have worked except for Penguin letting Falcone know about her mole, Liza.
    • And Penguin himself has his plan almost derailed by Buchinsky, but still manages to get to Falcone in time.
  • Tranquil Fury: Falcone never so much as raises his voice or looks angry as he chokes Liza to death.
