Bon Voyage

Lorelai drags Rory out of bed to show her that Christiane Amanpour is staying at the inn. Rory applies for many jobs and prepares for her and Lorelai's road trip. Lorelai tells her about the reenactment.

Rory gets a job for an online magazine to cover Barack Obama's presidential campaign. Cesar is trying to prove that he can handle the diner on his own. Lorelai cancels the reenactment to everyone's disappointment.

The town holds a secret town meeting to arrange the reenactment before Rory leaves. Luke sews all the tarps in town together to save the reenactment from rain. Richard and Emily attend the new ceremony.

Luke and Lorelai make up and get back together.

Tropes

  • Ad Hominem: During their verbal sparring, Zach argues that it is Taylor, and not his own suggestion, who is highly irregular.
  • As Himself: Christiane Amanpour visits the Dragonfly inn. She is played by Christiane Amanpour.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": Subverted with Lorelai and Rory's impromptu reenactment of the graduation ceremony. That is some truly horrible acting.
  • Big Damn Kiss: As it is the established Luke/Lorelai way to enter a relationship, they get back together in this manner when Lorelai learns that he sewed tarps together all night so they could throw Rory's graduation reenactment.
  • Book Ends: Lorelai and Rory sit at Luke's chatting about how much coffee and food they want, just like it the pilot.
  • Call-Back: Rory mocks herself for freaking out about leaving her mom, just like she was freaking out about moving out to live at Yale in season four.
  • Companion Cube: Rory adopts a poor abandoned book light.
  • Compliment Backfire: Rory is a bit fed up with everyone thinking she's great all the time.
  • Continuity Nod: Lane mentions that her first kiss was not Dave Rygalski.
  • Continuity Snarl: Rory claims not to know what's it's like to have a sister, despite literally having a sister.
    • To be fair, it's her half-sister, sixteen years younger who she's probably only met a few times, so she really doesn't have the experience of living with a sister. And April is her step-sister who she's never lived with either.
  • Logic Bomb: Taylor can't make official pronouncements at an unofficial meeting.
  • Metaphorgotten: Taylor's birth metaphor about Rory getting out of her home town and travelling for work gets a little too graphic and it seems like he actually forgot what his point was.
  • Non Sequitur: Babette wants you to look at her ankles. It comes out that they predict weather.
  • Real-Person Cameo: Christiane Amanpour, whose character is based on Christiane Amanpour.
  • Shout-Out: Michel accuses Lorelai of fangirling too much over celebrity inn guests, citing Sandra Day O'Connor and Marisa Tomei as examples. Other than that, no one makes a single shout out the entire episode.
  • Surprise Party: Luke turns the planned party that Lorelai cancelled into a surprise party. Originally it was supposed to be a graduation party for Rory to celebrate with the townsfolk, but it turns into a boy voyage one.
  • Too Much Information: Kirk informs Rory he made her sash from his mother's nightie.
    Rory: (quietly) Ew.
