Tropes

  • Blatant Lies:
    • Lorelai claims that you have to have sugary feet when you get introduced to her dog.
    • Zach's reasons not to write a song titled "Lane".
  • Celebrity Cameo: Joel, the tambourine player, is from The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Zach tries to run a sound check on his wireless mic.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Yeah, they still have the bop-it.
    • Lorelai says she left the Gilmore house in 1985, which is consistent with her living at home until Rory was one as alluded to in season 3.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: Chris feels that cheques and money orders are this trope.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Averted, as always. Liz cooks Thanksgiving dinner and somehow her rolls explode in the oven and her turkey melts.
  • Hypocrite: Zig-Zagged with Luke. Last episode he didn't want Christopher to be in Lorelai's life despite being Rory's father, but since he learned about April he thinks Chris definitely should be in Rory's life, but he still won't tell Lorelai about April despite all his talk about openness in relationships last episode.
  • Obsessed Are The List Makers:
    • Rory has already made a detailed list of things to do. Lorelai is not surprised.
    • Lorelai pulls her own version. She has written down all her random thoughts on scraps of paper and saved them in a box so she could tell Rory about them when their feud inevitably ended.
  • Passive-Aggressive Kombat: Zach isn't too happy about Brian writing Lane a song.
  • Product Placement:
    • Sephora.
    • Some logo in the background when Christopher is talking.
  • Secret Handshake: Lane and Rory have been reversing jinxes with one since elementary school. Lorelai wants in.
  • Shout-Out
    • The title is a reference to The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
    • Lorelai is worried Rory will pull an Elvis Presley.
    • Rory quotes Human Paul Anka, aka "the real Paul Anka", chewing out his band on tape, not yet convinced the canine version exists.
    • Lorelai assures her it's not a canine Louis Prima.
    • Lorelai wonders where Lenny Kravitz got all his money.
    • Babette's cats recorded "Ring of Fire".
    • Lorelai started reading Beowulf, then stopped reading Beowulf three minutes later.
    • Lane is worried she jinxed the showcase by worrying it will be a Waiting for Guffman thing.
    • Zach's new song has a bit of early The Who in it, according to Gil.
    • Brian asks if getting wireless mics is too Gwen Stefani.
    • Lorelai has the girls from the Wash&Brush company from The Wizard of Oz working for her.
    • Chris offers to buy Lorelai a castle in Narnia.
    • Paris laid out some Oscar Meyer for her employees at the Yale Daily News.
    • No one was sad about Chris's grandfather's death, like Buddy Hackett.
    • Lorelai is worried that Rory's cutting Emily and Richard out means a Freaky Friday event is happening.
    • Gil's first concert was with the band Grandaddy.
    • Zach compares himself to Axl Rose.
    • He wants to call out songs like Jack White.
    • The crowd cries Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
    • Chris offers to hire Rory Oompa loompas.
    • Liz cooking makes the kitchen look like Mötley Crüe lived there.
    • Liz points out that Luke is a serial monogamist, unlike Warren Beatty.
  • Slapstick:
    • Sookie when Rory comes back.
    • Off-screen example: Lorelai tells Rory that while she was away, she tried to scare Paul Anka's hiccups out of him, and he jumped so high he spilt her lip.
  • You Just Told Me: When Luke reveals the age of his newly discovered offspring, Liz can immediately guess who the mother is.
  • Womanchild: Liz offers to cook Thanksgiving dinner. She thinks it's fun to beat the roll dough package against the counter. Luke ends up doing it instead.
  • Writers Cannot Do Math: Subtitlers this time. Rory very specifically says 99.99% and it gets subtitled as 99.9%.
