Go To

Original air date: 10/27/2022

Jay hosts a last-minute Halloween party after the Arondekars' new neighbors, June and Allie, say they want to go to Liam Neeson's party. To liven up their dull party, the ghosts tell Sam to do a seance with their guests. They bring back Molly, Hetty's maid and her husband Elias' mistress, from the afterlife.

Tropes:

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: As the ghosts watch Sam and Jay hold a seance.
Pete: I can't believe they think this is real.
    Alberta: Pete, you're a ghost.
    Pete: Fair point.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • One man passes through Isaac and smells him, but Isaac tells Nigel that Pete is the source of the stench. Isaac is later forced to out himself as the one who emitted the smell when it's the only way to alert Jay to Sam being locked in the vault.
    • Nigel tells Isaac that he is happy to be with him and that Isaac wants to be with him while describing his own feet as webbed. Isaac fails to realize Nigel is talking about himself and the British Ghost laughs uncomfortably realizing Isaac didn't understand.
  • Call-Back:
    • When Isaac is trying to find the right words to describe his relationship with Nigel, he doesn't want to call themselves "boyfriends." Sass suggests Isaac and Nigel could be called "Murderer" and "Victim" respectively, referencing how Isaac did kill Nigel.
    • Elias' vault is brought up and plays an important role in the plot.
    • Hetty mentions she sent Elias to Hell, and Molly approves.
  • Celestial Bureaucracy: There is something running things up above as Molly notes that she is forbidden from discussing What Is Next or she will melt. She is relieved when she is allowed to say it is "Perfect" without consequence.
  • Character Development: Lampshaded but incremental. At the end when Molly and Hetty have made peace, Hetty describes her as one of the few good Irish she knows. Pete realizes that this isn't the lesson she should be taking away but Sass stops him saying it is some development.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The feather duster that June borrowed for her maid costume is the key ingredient that brings back Molly.
  • Condensation Clue: The ghosts use Trevor to write out a warning to Jay that Sam is in danger. As writing is so taxing on Trevor, he opts first to write "Sam Safe" rather than "vault." This confuses Jay but when he returns after Isaac stalls him with his power, Jay returns to the mirror and sees "Sam in Safe." Realizing the danger his wife is in, he books it to the vault.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Hetty, as most people from her time and position would, blames Molly for seducing her husband. While she realizes Elias was a lousy person in general, she still holds Molly accountable for sleeping with a married man. Sam, however, having grown up after the feminist movement and living through #MeToo, immediately clocks to the ridiculous power imbalance in the relationship (Molly was Elias' employee, and, being an Irish immigrant and a woman would have great trouble finding another job if she were to be fired) and notes that Molly wasn't really in a position to freely say "no."
  • The Ghost: No pun intended, but Liam Neeson is mentioned but never shown on screen.
  • Go into the Light: In the end, Molly returns back up to whence she came and Hetty tries to jump on and go up with her. However, the Powers That Be simply have her slip off Molly's dress and leaves her in Woodstone still.
  • Invisible to Normals: While the ghosts are this as usual, when the seance actually starts working to summon Molly from beyond, the ghosts see lighting flashing and other strange noises.
  • Late to the Realization: Hetty talks about how she once held a seance when she was alive and it seemed to work as the lights flickered and there was some awful smell. Midsentence, she pivots and realizes that it was Isaac and Thorfinn as ghosts messing with her and the guests.
  • Locked in a Freezer: Sam is locked in the vault with Hetty and Molly, and the other ghosts have to signal Jay before she runs out of air.
  • Locked in a Room: Flower suggests locking Hetty and Molly together in a room to work out their animosity, as was done in her cult. The vault is chosen as ghosts can't phase through it. Unfortunately, Sam is accidentally locked in with them.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Flower forgets Sam is in the ghost-proof vault and shuts the door, trapping her. She then runs off to tell Sam of this trouble.
    • Once Jay realizes the danger Sam is in, he rushes to save his wife.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Jay knows Isaac well enough that the ghost doesn't like being walked through and his stench emitted. So when Jay is walking away from the incomplete Condensation Clue and Isaac gets his attention by letting Jay walk through him, he turns back and learns of Sam's life-threatening situation.
  • Sexual Extortion: It's unclear whether Elias ever outright stated it was a quid pro quo situation, but Sam guesses that Molly and Elias' affair was essentially this, since he was Molly's boss and her social status meant she had no power over him whatsoever. Molly doesn't get into details but confirms that Sam's right, stating that she hated Elias as much as Hetty did, and only went along with it because she needed to keep her job to provide for her son after her husband died.
  • Spooky Séance: Sam and Jay hold a seance for their Halloween guests, hoping the ghosts can use their powers to liven things up. To everyone's surprise, the seance actually works, conjuring Molly from the afterlife.
