Dark and Troubled Past: We get to see Cammie's and Marin's in this episode.
- Marin had to watch Puerto Rico get destroyed by climate change (the official death toll was half a million, with the actual count implied to be higher), which was made worse by the rest of the world leaving the nation to die. It took Marin's grandmother instituting martial law to restore order, which is why Marin became a Well-Intentioned Extremist.
- Cammie apparently outlived her entire family, all of whom died within a relatively short time.
Driven to Suicide: Cammie defects to the Union and chooses to ascend into the Ether.
Everyone Has Standards: The Union only allows Ascension for those who are either terminally ill or very old, since they view the Ether as a physical afterlife.
Well-Intentioned Extremist: General Marin showcases both the root of her good intentions this episode (living through the death of Puerto Rico with only her grandmother's uncompromising martial law saved anyone from), but also the immoral extremes she is willing to go to (ordering the Gen:Lock team's arrest at Kazu's funeral just for speaking out against her).
