When the Leaves Began to Turn

Directed by Emi Yonemura

The Polity has been losing more and more ground over the past few months, if they continue to lose ground they will be removed from the United States. Colonel Marin uses a risky strategy to copy the brains of the Gen:LOCK team and use them to pilot auxiliary Holons.

Tropes:

  • An Arm and a Leg: Kazu's Holon eventually loses an arm, and the Polity is having a hard time obtaining a replacement.
  • Awful Truth: The colony on Mars was made up by Holcroft. Although the episode does imply that he wants to make it happen.
  • Canine Companion: A random homeless woman has one for a pet. Both are left as Collateral Damage.
  • Civilians Are Irrelevant: Colonel Marin's plans to use the copies end with several people killed by the fight between the gen:LOCK team and the Nemesii.
  • Dark Secret: The mental projection of Dr. Weller inside Caliban tells Chase that the Polity struck first.
  • Door of Doom: Chase's mental place is haunted by a terrifying demonic door, and the more terrifying part is the knocking coming from behind it.
  • Killed Off for Real: Leon.
  • Levitating Lotus Position: Yaz does this in her mental place.
  • Perplexing Plurals: This episode introduces the multiple copies of Nemesis, which are officially called with the plural "Nemesii", rather than that word's real plural, "nemeses".
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: The bunnies Cammie manifests.
  • Suicide Attack: The unmanned Holons do this to the Nemesii.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: Kazu's Holon loses its sword, and everyone else on the team mindshare to use it, eventually ending in one of them throwing it so that he can kill a Nemesis.
  • Time Skip: Six months have passed since the end of Season 1, bringing along two notable consequences. One, as Marin's experts predicted, the Union has very nearly conquered North America, with Gen:Lock One having barely managed to slow their progress. Also in that time, Val/entina has transitioned, his body now taking on the form of the man he appeared as in the mindscape during the second half of Season 1.
  • Unusual Pets for Unusual People: Cult leader Brother Tate owns a koala.
