This episode contains the following tropes:

  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: By the end of the episode, the Anvil is in Union hands.
  • Continuity Nod: The Holon Chase pilots in the Flash Back is the same one seen in early promotions of the show, including the initial promo image. The proto-Holon - with Chase's original mind inside - was captured by the Union at some point in the past and rebuilt into the Nemesis.
  • Darkest Hour: The Vanguard's base has been completely overrun by the Union's nanobots, Weller is likely dead, and the gen:LOCK team has been forced to flee. As if that's not bad enough, the Holons are in desperate need of repair.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Marcus Holcroft and Dr. Jha are briefly shown during the Hard-Work Montage, when Chase is first uploaded successfully. They're properly introduced in the next episode, however.
  • Exact Words: Chase points out that Weller said he couldn't make copies of his consciousness, Weller responds that he only said he wasn't making copies. Not that he couldn't, or didn't - early protocol when Chase was the only pilot was to backup his mind whenever he uploaded and store it in the second cyberbrain they had on base. This practice stopped when Chase and his Holon were captured by the Union and the backup restored to his body; Chase was told the mission was scrubbed due to malfunction.
  • Hard-Work Montage: Weller recounts the early years of the gen:LOCK program to Chase. Starting from his rescue after the Battle of New York, to his rehabilitation and first uploads into the cyberbrain and Holon, and even his original self's capture by the Union.
  • Hope Spot: The Anvil's massive weapons are able to destroy the Behemoth, seemingly turning the tide of the battle. But from the Behemoth's wreckage, the Union's Nanite smoke emerges and engulfs the entire place, rendering the Behemoth's destruction a moot point.
  • Live-Action Escort Mission: While fleeing the Anvil, the gen:LOCK team have to protect Chase's Holon tank (which is being pushed by Caliban while his mind continues fighting in his Holon outside the base) as they make their way to an evac transport.
  • Reforged into a Minion: Nemesis was the original Chase, trapped in his Holon when he was captured by the Union on a mission, driven mad by the experience and what they did to turn him into Nemesis and get him on their side. He's now driven by a desire to kill the Chase we know and reclaim his organic body, despite the impossibility of that goal.
  • The Reveal: The episode reveals some awful truths and the war between Polity and the Union takes a dark turn. Chase is revealed to be a backup copy of the original Chase's. Early mission protocol used to be that back-ups were made of Chase's mind before he was uploaded for a mission. He was captured while his mind was still inside his Holon and forcefully conscripted into the Union as Nemesis.
  • Sarcastic Confession: When Kazu wants to celebrate the previous episode's victory, Leon sarcastically chews him out by suggesting they have a party. He then tells the crew to prepare for a debrief. As the heartbroken gen:LOCK team discovers soon, the debrief was in fact a cover for a party, and Leon's sarcasm and anger was to throw them off.
  • Shout-Out:
    • To Red vs. Blue.
Weller: You ever wonder why we're here?
    • To Iron Man
Weller: You learned how to run, and then it was time to learn how to walk.
    • To The Empire Strikes Back.
ABLE: Union troops have entered the base. Repeat, Union troops have entered-
  • Special Edition Title: The opening is almost identical to the previous ones, except instead of briefly flashing to his real body at the end, Chase's avatar flickers to a darker, red-eyed distorted version of his digital form, presumably his "Nemesis" self.
  • Taking You with Me: When Dr. Weller is surrounded by Union troops in his lab, he pulls out a grenade and detonates it, presumably vaporizing himself, the soldiers, and the gen:LOCK gear.
  • Title Drop: Chase says it when Miranda demands to know how many copies of him are out there, and if he's even the 'real' Chase at all.
Chase: I'm the only me I know.
  • Uncertain Doom: After the Anvil is engulfed in the Union Nanite smoke, Chase is unable to reach anyone on comms and has to leave to protect the gen:Lock team. While for sure anyone outside unprotected was killed, the striders have been shown to have anti-smoke protection, but it's unknown if anyone inside the Anvil would have had the same protections.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: It turns out the Anvil is packing two massive railguns inside the main tower, capable of taking down a Behemoth.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Chase chews out Weller for not telling him the truth about his backup copies from earlier in the program.
