This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Brutal Honesty: When Chase asks Miranda for her opinion of the new recruits, she gives him a very frank assessment: they are nowhere near ready to fight the Union, lacking even the most basic teamwork skills.
  • Culture Clash: Played for Laughs when Kazu remarks that he wants some beer and Cammie chimes in, only for the others to rebuke she can't have any. When Cammie points out that she's of legal drinking age in Scotland (if ordered with food), Yaz retorts that they aren't in Scotland.
  • Four Is Death: The fourth episode introduces Nemesis and showcases how brutal a fighter it is; were it not for her Holon being a Remote Body, Cammie would be dead.
  • Info Dump: Combined with a Training Montage, the first part of the episode has Dr. Weller teaching the new recruits (and the audience by proxy) the basics of how the Holons and gen:LOCK technology function.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Nemesis has two sets of arms and is very dangerous.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: As mentioned above, the Union usually follows this approach in their tactics, which is why the attack in the Ether hub is so unusual for them, given the risk.
  • Shout-Out: While in the Ether, Cammie suggests the team play a 'fantasy warrior' game and fight monsters. Their avatars briefly take the form of characters from RWBY.note
  • Training Montage: The first act of the episode shows the gen:LOCK team learning how to use their Holons in combat.
