The gen:LOCK team begins rigorous training to master their mecha. The recruits get better acquainted during a rare moment of downtime. While on the gen:LOCK team’s first field mission, a new threat emerges from the shadows.

* CultureClash: PlayedForLaughs when Kazu remarks that he wants some beer and Cammie chimes in, only for the others to rebuke she can't have any. When Cammie points out that she's of legal drinking age in Scotland, Yaz retorts that they aren't in Scotland.

* RealityEnsues: The episode deconstructs the usual RagtagBunchOfMisfits team-building tropes, and shows that getting a group of fresh recruits with very different backgrounds and personalities to bond and fight as a fire team is an uphill battle:
** Chase and Yaz work well together, but they have the benefit of a shared background as career military pilots and lots of practice using their Holons.
** Kazu's HotBlooded nature and berserker tendencies mean he constantly [[LeeroyJenkins runs right into the line of fire]] and causes a ton of collateral damage in his Holon.

* ShoutOut: While in the Ether, Cammie suggests the team play a 'fantasy warrior' game and fight monsters. * FreezeFrameBonus: Driana, Chase's younger sister who was believed dead after New York can be seen and heard just as the Ether goes down, having seen Chase from across the room.

* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: The Union's attack on the Ether hub in Dallas raises allot of red flags in the Polity. Their usual MO is to subvert the Polity government and control systems in the border regions, then move their troops in and occupy the cities while leaving the infrastructure and population mostly intact for them to use. An attack against a major internet hub in a city behind the lines is unusually bold and potentially self defeating, even for them.
