Recap / Full House S 4 E 4 Slumber Party

Go To

Stephanie's Honeybee troop is having its annual mother-daughter sleepover, and Becky has offered to step in as Stephanie's chaperone. However, while driving home from a business trip out of town, Becky's car breaks down, meaning she won't be back in town in time. Joey offers to step in as a substitute chaperone and go to the party but has a tough time adapting to the mother-daughter bonding the other girls are, and Stephanie – feeling left out and humiliated – tearfully runs home. She unleashes pent up grief over her mother being dead until D.J. helps Stephanie deal with her feelings and missing their mother, and D.J. agrees to go to the party with Stephanie, though not before Stephanie thanks Joey for all he endured to make her happy.

Tropes seen in this episode:

  • Broken Tears: Stephanie, triggered by missing her mother when she has a bad time at the Honeybees' mother-daughter sleepover.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The Honeybee troop leader doesn't take into account Stephanie's situation with Joey filling in as a replacement. As such she fails to see when the mother-daughter activities are less-than-ideal for a man like Joey or uncomfortable for Stephanie to participate in nor does she try to choose or adapt the activities to ones to better include Joey and Stephanie until it's too late and Stephanie runs off in tears.
  • Posthumous Character: Pam Tanner is referred to, as Stephanie – seeing how the other girls are having a great time bonding with their mothers, that her own mother died four years earlier, that Becky planned to go with her but couldn't make it because her car broke down miles out of town, that her father's goofy-if-not-awkward best friend tried to "fill in" but was wildly out-of-place, and extremely jealous that D.J. got to have mother-daughter nights with Pam – unleashes pent-up grief over missing her mother.
  • Scout-Out: The Honeybees are Stephanie's Girl Scout-type group. D.J. was part of this group (for elementary school-aged girls) as well, and by the last season Michelle will also be a part of the Honeybees. Pam (the girls' mother) was a member when she was young, and – as she reveals in this episode – so was Becky. Kimmy is also a Honeybee alum.
