Monica and Chandler's attempts to dance at their wedding reception are compromised by Chandler's slippery shoes. Phoebe covers for Rachel by saying she's the one who's pregnant. Chandler's mother brings a big-name Broadway producer as her date and Joey tries to impress him. Ross wants to dance with a hot girl, but is constantly thwarted by a bunch of little girls wanting to dance with him.
Tropes:
- Agony of the Feet: Ross spends the whole night dancing with little girls standing on his shoes. That wasn't so bad, but then a large, heavy-set girl asks to dance standing on his feet too. He leaves the reception in great pain.
- Blatant Lies: When told she's not actually pregnant, Rachel insists that's great and exactly the way she wanted it to be, all while being on the verge of tears.
- Call-Back: With Rachel freaking out, Phoebe suggests that the first test may've been inaccurate. She points to how she had to take the test three times before finding out she was pregnant.
- Cliffhanger Copout: Subverted with the second pregnancy test. Phoebe reports it says Rachel isn't pregnant, thus making it seem like viewers waited three months for nothing more than Rachel being upset about this development. Phoebe then reveals Rachel actually is pregnant.
- Dedication: "To the people of New York City." This was the first episode to air after the September 11 attacks.
- Dreaded Kids' Table: Ross tries to sit at the same table as Mona, but misreads her table number and to his chagrin, ends up sitting at the kids' table. In the extended cut of the episode Ross admits to Ben that he can't swap back as the girl whose seat he took is refusing to move.
- Exact Words: When questioned by Phoebe about the belief that Monica was pregnant, Rachel points out that Phoebe was to one to claim that. She says she just didn't correct her. Phoebe approvingly admits that was rather sneaky.
- I Can't Dance: Chandler knows how bad he is at dancing and took lessons to combat it but his shoe issues mean he has to go back to his old moves. He's horrified when Jack Geller reveals he dances the same way.
- Jerkass: In the extended cut of the episode Judy starts to tell Monica how happy and proud she is, but when Monica tells her mother she's not pregnant Judy immediately loses interest and goes back to being indifferent towards Monica.
- Mistaken for Flatulence: Ross' chair keeps squeaking whenever he moves which makes the kids think he's farting.
- Mistaken for Gay: While covering for Rachel, Phoebe claims the father is James Brolin. She says the only other name she could think of was Ed Begley Jr., which she ruled out because she thought he was gay. She's intrigued when told that's not the case.
- One Drink Will Kill the Baby: Rachel absentmindedly drinks champagne, only to spit it back out after remembering she's pregnant. This is how Monica figures out the truth. After accidentally taking a second sip she asks Monica to take the drink away from her.
- Pick Up Babes With Babes: Ross humors the little girls wanting to dance with him because Mona reacted positively when the first girl asked.
- Pregnancy Test Plot: Monica and Phoebe convince Rachel to take the pregnancy test again to make sure whether she is expecting or not. After she takes it, Phoebe says it came up negative, eliciting an emotional reaction out of Rachel who wasn't sure she wanted the baby. Then Phoebe reveals she lied and it's positive.
- Secret Test of Character: Phoebe deliberately lied about the results of the pregnancy test to see how an indecisive Rachel truly felt about having a baby. Rachel points out that was very risky.
- Tears of Joy: Rachel when finding out she is indeed pregnant.
- The Unreveal: Rachel refuses to say who the father of he baby is despite Monica and Phoebe asking multiple times.
- Wham Line: After a brief fakeout Phoebe reveals that Rachel's pregnancy test is positive.
