Recap / Friends S 6 E 1 The One After Vegas

Go To

Ross is reluctant to annul his Vegas marriage to Rachel. Chandler and Monica have second thoughts about getting married. Phoebe and Joey travel back to New York on Phoebe's taxi.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: Let your relationship move at the pace you feel comfortable with instead of relying on superstition.
  • Bouquet Toss: Chandler and Monica decide not to get married but keep getting signs that they should. When Rachel is about to put a bouquet of flowers into a vase, she finds a bug and throws the bouquet away, and Monica accidentally catches it.
  • Bridal Carry: Monica hurts her leg on the way home, so Chandler scoops her up this way so she won't have to walk. As they walk into her apartment they realize that they've stumbled into another "sign" and back into the hallway. They settle for having Monica cling to Chandler's neck without him holding her up until she can drop onto the couch.
  • Character Development: Chandler, who's previously struggled with Commitment Issues, is the one to suggest that he and Monica move in together.
  • Continuity Snarl: When Ross and Rachel wake up after the night they get married, they both still have the marker doodles on their faces. Later, at breakfast, both have no sign of the doodles, even though Ross confirmed (in the last episode) that the marker is permanent.
  • Credits Gag: This is the first episode after Courteney Cox married David Arquette and changed her name to Courteney Cox Arquette. To commemorate this, all the other leads and the show creators have "Arquette" appended to their names in the title sequence. Courteney and Jennifer also switch places in the credits to make the joke work.
For Courteney and David, who did get married.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: When Ross and Rachel refuse to believe they got married the previous night and protest that the chapel would not let two drunk people do so, Joey points out that drunk people make up the majority of Las Vegas marriages.
  • Hostile Hitchhiker: Subverted. Joey picks up a hitchhiker while Phoebe sleeps and even gets him to drive so he can get some shut-eye. When Phoebe wakes up, she not-so-subtly wonders whether he could be a serial killer or rapist, but he turns out to be benign. By the time they drop him off, Phoebe has taken such a liking to the guy that she gives him her phone number.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Monica gives Chandler a key to the apartment. He quips the door hasn't been locked in five years, referencing the numerous times characters have entered with no difficulty. In this episode alone, they returned from Vegas without having to unlock the door first.
  • Noodle Incident: When Monica tells Phoebe that getting married in Vegas counts everywhere, Phoebe reacts with a stunned "Oh my God", before shrugging and walking away.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • A sleepy Joey upon realizing he's driving with closed eyes.
    • Ross and Rachel when they realize what they did at the chapel.
  • "Open!" Says Me: The door to Monica's apartment gets jammed after a rusty key breaks inside the lock, so they get Joey to try to fix it. He rams down the door instead.
  • Running Gag: Chandler and Monica being confronted with supposed signs that they should get married.
  • Shout-Out: Music from Taxi Driver plays as Joey drives Phoebe's taxi.
  • Sustained Misunderstanding: Chandler drops hints to Monica about moving in together, such as unpacking his stuff in her apartment. She responds by asking why he'd leave his stuff there and would want to keep going back-and-forth across the hallway. After a few moments of this, he flat-out says they should move in together.
Chandler: What if we lived together and you understood what I'm saying?
  • Wham Line: Ross tells Rachel that he took care of the annulment, but while Rachel is getting her coat...
    Ross: Wanna hear something weird?
    Phoebe: Always.
Ross: I never got the annulment.
    Phoebe: What?
Ross: We're still married. Don't tell Rachel. Okay, bye!
  • What Did I Do Last Night?: Rachel and Ross have trouble recalling what they did the night before on account of their being drunk at the time. They have to be reminded by the rest of the gang that they got married.
