Recap / Friends S 5 E 16 The One With The Cop

Go To

Phoebe finds a police badge at Central Perk and uses it to scare people. Ross buys a new couch and has some difficulty moving it into his new apartment. Joey is troubled after dreaming about being together with Monica.

Tropes:

  • Badge Gag: The badge is real, it's just that Phoebe isn't a cop. She uses it to cow people into doing what she says (like getting a woman to apologize to a tree for putting out her cigarette on its trunk).
  • Batman Gambit: Phoebe starts screaming for her non-existent "backup" when the woman she's bullying refuses to comply with her ridiculous demands to apologize to a tree, knowing that this will make her do it.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Chandler's response to Ross's increasingly poor attempts to get the couch up the stairs.
    Ross: Pivot! Pivot! PIVOT!
Chandler: Shut up! SHUT UP! SHUT UUUUUP!
  • Confronting Your Imposter: Phoebe ends up invoking this on herself when the latest person she's trying to pull her "I'm a cop" stunt on turns out to actually be one, forcing her to make up stories about what precinct she works at, etc., when he keeps asking her questions.
  • Drunk with Power: Phoebe invokes the trope by name when discussing her usage of the badge with the friends and how she's able to get people to do what she wants.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Joey is rather disturbed by dreaming about being with his best friend's girlfriend.
  • Hidden Depths: Joey's dream about Monica isn't some raunchy affair; it's just the two of them cuddling and doing a crossword.
  • Her Boyfriend's Jacket: The opening scene sees Monica wearing Chandler's pajama top. When Joey dreams about being in Chandler's place Monica is wearing his shirt and gilet instead. The next day he's mildly freaked out when Monica borrows his sweatshirt and says she should be borrwing Chandler's stuff instead.
  • Impersonating an Officer: What Phoebe does when she finds the lost police badge.
  • Meet Cute: Phoebe ends up meeting the policeman that the badge belongs to. Instead of getting arrested, she starts dating him.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: Happens to Ross. When he describes his dream couch, he says he wants "something kids would like" and something that also says "hey, come to me" - said with a lecherous smirk. Rachel and the salesman are both disturbed and he has to hastily explain the two moods are for two totally different situations.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: With Joey unable to help move the couch, Rachel brought the next best thing: Chandler. An incredulous Ross says the next best thing would've been Monica, which Chandler doesn't take offense to because (as he says) Monica is freakishly strong.
  • Oh, Crap!: Phoebe drops her trademark "Oh, no" when the latest person she tries to pull her "I'm a cop" stunt on turns out to be an actual cop. It gets worse when he reveals that that's his badge she's using.
  • Product Delivery Ordeal: Ross' subplot in this episode involves him and Rachel trying to carry a big couch to his apartment. Unable to get the large item up his building's narrow stairwell, they resort to asking for Chandler's help, though their combined effort only ends up getting the couch stuck in the shaft.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Beautiful!: Phoebe should have been arrested because she abused the badge and its authority - but ends up unpunished, because the officer she stole it from has a crush on her.
  • Shout-Out: Phoebe tries to claim that she knows another cop called Sipowicz, a character from NYPD Blue.
