Go To

Rachel comes up with an excuse for seeing Joshua: she gives Emily a going away party.

Tropes

  • 24-Hour Party People: Averted, the only other guest at the impromptu party is Gunther.
  • All Guys Want Cheerleaders: In a desperate, last-ditch attempt to win Joshua over Rachel digs out her high school cheerleader uniform, claiming that "for four years this baby never missed". At the end of the episode Rachel lets Joshua into her apartment, turns to Chandler and waves her hand over the uniform and points out that it worked again.
  • Big Eater: Joey. He eats in the shower! Phoebe temporarily becomes one too and they bond over their shared love of meat.
  • Call-Back: Monica tells Emily Ross used to dress like an older woman.
  • Erotic Eating: Rachel attempts to flirt with Joshua by claiming she can tie a cherry into a knot using her tongue. She ends up choking on the cherry instead.
  • Feeling the Baby Kick: Phoebe's baby kicks during the Spin the Bottle game prompting everyone to jump up and coo over it.
  • Funny Background Event: Gunther is apparently put to work doing the dishes, even before the party is over.
  • Little Black Dress: One of Rachel's attempts to seduce Joshua involves putting on a slinky black dress. It doesn't work.
  • Modesty Shorts: Rachel's cheerleader uniform includes black shorts under the skirt, which helps to preserve her modesty when she does a cartwheel (although it doesn't help her dignity when she crashes into the wall).
  • Self-Deprecation: Rachel calls herself a pathetic loser. When she asks Chandler whether he was one, he casually and genuinely answers "sure"!
  • Shout-Out: Joey tells Rachel to copy the "take your bra off under your shirt" trick from Flashdance, which he briefly confuses with Footloose.
  • Spin the Bottle: Rachel initially dismisses this suggestion, pointing out they're not eleven years old anymore, but as the evening wears on she resorts to it. Joey and Emily land on each other much to Ross' annoyance. In a DVD exclusive scene, Chandler lands on himself ("story of my life"), then on Joshua ("story of my father's life"). Rachel finally lands on Joshua...which is when Phoebe's baby starts kicking and distracts everyone.
  • Trial-Period Dating: Ross and Emily had agreed not to commit to anything past the two weeks she was spending in New York, and now it's her last day before going home to England. Ross tries to put on a brave face but obviously doesn't want to let her go. Rachel points out to him that Emily has spent the party trying to learn about him from his sister and friends, something a person wouldn't do if they were only interested in a short fling, and encourages him to make this a real relationship.
  • Wacky Cravings: Ethical vegetarian Phoebe starts craving meat and trying to trick her body with tofu doesn't work. After she takes a bite out of Chandler's sandwich while he's eating it Joey tells her to Do Wrong, Right and pulls slabs of meat out of the fridge to serve her. By the end they've reached an agreement where Joey will abstain from meat for the rest of her pregnancy to keep the universe in balance.
  • Zip Me Up: Rachel asks for help with her black dress, and has to pointedly tell Joey "up!".
