Tropes

  • Act of True Love: Ross is set to appear on TV. However when Rachel has to be taken to the hospital, he decides to prioritize her health and misses the opportunity. Rachel is touched when she realizes this.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Joey sees a report on people buying baby chicks for Easter, thinks it's a commercial and orders one, completely missing the part in the report about the chicks dying because they weren't taken care of properly.
  • Didn't Think This Through: In the face of him insisting she go to the hospital, Rachel says Ross can either help her get ready for a dinner party or leave. Ross says he's leaving, only for Rachel to plead with him to stay to help.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Joey and Chandler caring for the chick resembles two new parents caring for their newborn baby, complete with all the stress that comes with such a responsibility.
Chandler: Ever since we got this chick, we've been fighting a lot more than we used to.
Joey: I dunno, maybe we weren't ready to have a chick.
  • The Gadfly: Ross messes with Rachel by reminding her that, as the ex-boyfriend, he can picture her naked whenever he wants.
Ross: [eyes closed] Now, there are a hundred of you, and I'm the king!
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: Joey lets out an excited "Oh my" when entering after the Suggestive Collision.
  • Grand Romantic Gesture: Pete claims he didn't buy the restaurant just for Monica but Phoebe sees through it and works out that he's still hoping she'll fall for him. When Monica works it out she refuses the job, but then gives him a Test Kiss that finally sparks her feelings for him.
  • Heroic BSoD: Joey is in a funk early on because of his problems with Kate.
  • Innocent Innuendo: When Monica was a child, she used an Easy-Bake Oven to open Easy Monica's Bakery.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Chandler insists that how he ended up adopting the Duck is quite the funny story.
  • Shout-Out:
    • When Joey grabs the chick and starts cooing over it, Chandler snarks "Easy, Lennie." Lennie is a character from Of Mice and Men who liked cuddling with soft animals very much.
    • Chandler watches Baywatch with the Chick and talks about Yasmine Bleeth. He later refers to the Chick as "Little Yasmine" when talking to Joey.
  • Suggestive Collision: Monica trips while roller-skating, and falls on Rachel in the cold open. This results in Rachel laying on her back while Monica is laying on top of her. Joey notices. Unfortunately Rachel does get badly injured from the incident, leading to one of the episode's plots.
  • Tacky Tuxedo: Ross has an all-white one that he intends to wear for his TV appearance. Rachel had previously prevented him from wearing it. She and Monica proceed to crack jokes, such as likening him to Eli Whitney and Colonel Sanders.
  • Test Kiss: Monica does this to Pete towards the end of the episode. Apparently it went well as she immediately kisses him again, officially starting their relationship.
  • Uncanny Valley Makeup: Rachel's injury prevents her from applying make-up herself, so she tells Ross what needs to be done. She is not happy about the end and very excessive result, and she later decides to wash it off before they go to the hospital.
