Tropes

  • The Alcoholic: Fun Bobby turns out to be one.
Phoebe: Did you notice how he always starts his stories with, um, "Okay, I was so wasted", or "Ooh, we were so bombed", or, um, "So I wake up and I'm in this dumpster in Connecticut."
  • Casting Couch: Joey encounters a gender flipped version when the female casting agent at Days of Our Lives indicates that she'll cast him if he sleeps with her. He eventually decides he too much pride to sleep with someone for a bit role and turns her down. She's so impressed that she offers him a much larger recurring role which convinced Joey to sleep with her.
  • Doppelgänger Dating: After breaking up with Ross, Rachel goes out with Russ, who looks, acts, and talks just like Ross. In The Stinger, after Rachel breaks up with Russ, he meets with Ross's ex-girlfriend, Julie and it's Love at First Sight.
  • Double Vision: How David Schwimmer played both Ross and Russ.
  • Friendship Moment: When reviews for Joey's new play come down hard on him, the others immediately comfort and try to reassure him.
  • Has a Type:
    • Rachel unknowingly chose someone who is almost exactly like Ross as a date. It's only when she sees the two of them together that it dawns on her, and all she can say is "Ew!" over and over.
    • Julie ends up falling for Russ after she breaks up with Ross.
  • I Call Him "Mister Happy": Apparently Joey calls his penis "The Little General" having promoted it from "The Little Major" after a previous girlfriend.
  • Identical Stranger: Russ is basically Ross with the Serial Numbers Filed Off. This is obvious to everyone except for Rachel and Ross himself.
  • In Vino Veritas: When sober, Fun Bobby becomes Ridiculously Dull Bobby.
  • M.D. Envy: When Russ says Ross is jealous of him being a real doctor, Ross points out that he's just a periodontist.
Ross: Hey, you're a doctor of gums. That's the smallest body part you can major in. It's like day one, floss, day two, here's your diploma.
  • Oblivious to His Own Description: When Ross criticizes Russ.
Ross: I don't know what she sees in that goober. It takes him, what, like... like, I don't know, uh, hello, a week to get out a sentence?
Chandler: Yeah. It's annoying, isn't it?
Ross: [After a long hesitation] …Yeah!
  • Pair the Spares: The stinger features Russ meeting Julie and instantly becoming attracted to each other.
  • Side Bet: Apparently Ross, Chandler, Phoebe and Rachel had bets going on whether Monica and Fun Bobby would break up and whether Joey would sleep with the casting agent. Phoebe and Rachel win the first bet but then immediately hand the money back to Ross and Chandler when they lose the second.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!: Monica regrets getting Fun Bobby sober because without alcohol, he's just not that fun.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: The others look over the reviews and find Joey repeatedly getting trashed. Monica finds a review that suggests Joey will actually be praised for his efforts, but upon continuing to the next page, she finds it outright says that he sucks.
